(John 18:19-27; Matt. 26:71-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:55-62) The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort, and in secret I have spoken nothing. Why askest thou me? Ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold, they know what things I have said. And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so? Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me? And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.
Now Simon Peter was standing without in the court, and warming himself. And again another maid saw him, and she said to them that stood by: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth. They that stood by came and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee to be a Galilean. And again he denied with an oath: I know not the man. And after a little while, about the space of one hour, one of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off, saith: Surely this man also was with him: for he is a Galilean. Did not I see thee in the garden with him? Then he began to curse and to swear and to anathematize: I neither know nor understand what thou sayest: I know not this man of whom you speak. And immediately the cock crew.
And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.
