176:1
Luc. XXIII, 32-34.
(Luke 23:32-34) And there were also two other malefactors led with him, to be put to death. (Matt. 27:35-37; Mark 15:22-26) And after they were come to the place which is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary, there they crucified him. And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall; and when he had tasted, he would not drink. And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (John 19:19-24) And after they had crucified him, they took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said then one to another: Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be.
176:2
Respondit Pilatus: Quod scripsi, scripsi. — MATTH. XXVII, 38-44; MARC. xv, 27-32; LUC. XXIII, 35-43.
That the Scripture might be fulfilled, saying: They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they cast lots (Ps. 22:18). And the soldiers indeed did these things. And they sat and watched him. And Pilate wrote a title also, of his cause, and put it over his head: This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. This title therefore many of the Jews did read; for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews. Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written. (Matt. 27:38-44; Mark 15:27-32; Luke 23:35-43)
176:3
Tunc crucifixeruntcum eo ducs latrones, unum a dexteris, et alterum a sinistris ejus.
Then were crucified with him two thieves, one on the right hand and one on the left. And they that passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads and saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self; if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said: He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him. He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God. And one of those thieves who were hanged blasphemed him in the same way, saying: If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us.
176:4
But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil. And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom. And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. (John 19:25-27) Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own. (Matt. 27:45-50; Mark 15:33-37; Luke 23:44-46)
176:5
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani (Ps. 22:1)? That is: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some that stood there and heard said: This man calleth Elias. (John 19:28-30) Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled (Ps. 69:21), said: I thirst. Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And immediately one of them running took a sponge and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed and gave him to drink. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said: It is consummated. But the rest said:
176:6
Sine, videamus an veniat Elias liberans cum. Jcsus autem iterum clamans voce magna, ait: Pater, In manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum. — MATTH. XXVII, 51-54; MARC. XV, 38, 39; Luc. XXIII, 47, 48.
Stay, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him. And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost. (Matt. 27:51-54; Mark 15:38-39; Luke 23:47-48) And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom. And the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose. And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they came into the holy city and appeared to many. Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake and the things that were done, were sore afraid, glorifying God and saying:
176:7
Hic homo justus vere Filius Dei erat. — MATTH. XXVII, 55, 56; MARC. xv, 40, 41; Luc. XXIII, 49.
Indeed this was a just man, the Son of God. And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts. (Matt. 27:55-56; Mark 15:40-41; Luke 23:49) And all his acquaintance stood afar off, and the many women that had followed him together from Galilee to Jerusalem. Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joseph, and Salome the mother of the sons of Zebedee (who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him), beholding these things. (John 19:31-36)
176:8
The Jews therefore, because it was the parasceve, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath day was a great day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The soldiers therefore came, and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; but one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water. And he that saw it hath given testimony; and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true, that you also may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him (Exod. 12:46; Num. 9:12). And again another Scripture saith:
176:9
Videbunt in quem transfixerunt (Zachar. XII, 10).
They shall look on him whom they pierced (Zach. 12:10).
