Per huiusmodi potum, significat passionem. Et Jacolum quidem novissimum martyrio consummandum (Actor. XII, 2), fratrem vero ejus Joannem transiturum absque martyrio; quamvis et affictiones plurimas, et exsilia tolerarit: sed præparatam martyrio mentem Christus martyrem judicavit. Nam Apostolus Paulus: Quotidie, inquit, morior (I Cor. xv, 31); dum impossibile sit quotidie mori hominem ea morte qua semel vita hæc finitur. Sed quoniam pro Evangelio ad mortem jugiter erat præparatus, se mori quotidie sub ea significatione testatus eat. Legitur (In gestis) et in dolio ferventis olei pro nomine Christi beatus Joannes fuisse demersus.
藉這一類的杯，主是指著為信仰所受的苦難。雅各固然要在末了藉他的見證得成全（徒十二2），他兄弟約翰卻要不經這樣的結局而過去；雖然他也忍受了極多的患難與流放。但基督既算他心裡已豫備好，就看他為見證人。因為使徒保羅說：我天天冒死（林前十五31）；然而人不可能天天以這生命一次終了的方式冒死。只因他為著福音的信仰時刻豫備好，就見證自己在那意義上天天冒死。書上（在史傳中）記著，蒙福的約翰也曾為基督的名被沉入一鍋滾油之中。
By a draught of this kind he signifies suffering for the faith. And James indeed was to be perfected at the last by his witness (Acts 12:2), but his brother John was to pass over without such a death; although he too endured very many afflictions and exiles. Yet Christ counted him a witness, since his mind was prepared for it. For the Apostle Paul says: I face death daily (1 Cor. 15:31); whereas it is impossible for a man to face death daily in the way by which this life is once ended. But because he was continually ready for the faith of the Gospel, he declared that in that sense he faced death daily. It is read (in the accounts) that for the name of Christ the blessed John was also plunged into a vessel of boiling oil.
