Loc. IV, 16-21. Et venit Nazareth ubi erat nutritus, et intravit secundum consuetudinem suam die sabbati in synagogam, et surrexit legere, et traditus est illi liber Iaiæ prophetae. Et ut revolvit librum, invenit locum ubi scriptum erat: Spiritus Domini super me; propter quod unxit me, evangelizare pauperibus misit me, sanare contritos corde 15, prædicare captivis remissionem, et caecis visum, dimittere confractos in remissionem, praedicare annum Domini acceptum et diem retributionis (Isa. LXI, 1,2). Et cum plicuissetlibrum,reddiditmmistro,etsedit.Etomnium in synagoga oculi erant intendentes in eum. Coepit autem dicere ad illos: Quia hodie impleta est hæc Scriptura in auribus vestris.—MATTH.

(Luke 4:16-21) And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and he entered, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and rose up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him; and as he unrolled the book, he found the place where it was written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; wherefore he hath anointed me, he hath sent me to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the contrite of heart, to preach deliverance to the captives and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of recompense' (Isa. 61:1-2). And when he had folded the book, he gave it back to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon him. And he began to say to them: 'This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears.'

(Matt. 4:17; Mark 1:15) From that time Jesus began to preach and to say: 'For the time is fulfilled: do penance, and believe the gospel; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
