141:1
JOAN. XI, 1 -56. Deinde, post hæc dicit discipulis suis: Eamus in Judæam iter um. Dicunt ei discipuli: Rabbi, * in Judæam?
JOHN XI, 1-56. Now there was a certain man who was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister. And Mary was she who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. The sisters therefore sent to him, saying: 'Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.' But Jesus, hearing this, said to them: 'This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.' Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. When therefore he heard that he was sick, he then remained in the same place two days. After this he said to his disciples: 'Let us go into Judea again.' The disciples said to him: 'Rabbi, into Judea?'
141:2
Just now the Jews sought to stone you, and do you go there again?' Jesus answered: 'Are there not twelve hours of the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; but if he walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.' These things he said, and after this he said to them: 'Lazarus our friend sleeps; but I go that I may wake him from sleep.' His disciples therefore said: 'Lord, if he sleeps, he will be well.' But Jesus had spoken of his death; they, however, thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep. Then therefore Jesus told them plainly: 'Lazarus is dead; and I rejoice for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.' Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples:
141:3
Eamus et nos, et moriamur cum eo. Venit itaque Jesus, cet invenit eum jam quatuor dies in monumento * manentem. Sed et nunc scio quia quaecunque poposceris a Deo, d ibit tibi Deus. Dicit illi Jesus: Resurget frater tuus. Dicit * ergo Martha; Scio quia resurget in resurrectione,in novissimo die.
'Let us also go, that we may die with him.' Jesus therefore came and found that he had already been four days in the tomb. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. When Martha therefore heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha therefore said to Jesus: 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.' Jesus said to her: 'Your brother shall rise again.' Martha said to him: 'I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection, at the last day.' Jesus said to her: 'I am the resurrection and the life.'
141:4
Qui credit in me, etiamsi mortuus fuerit, vivet.
'He who believes in me, even though he die, shall live. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?' She said to him: 'Yes, Lord; I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God, who has come into this world.' And when she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, saying: 'The Master is here, and calls for you.' When she heard this, she rose quickly and came to him. For Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was still in that place where Martha had met him. The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose quickly and went out, followed her, saying: 'She is going to the tomb to weep there.'
141:5
Mary therefore, when she had come where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet and said to him: 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he groaned in spirit and troubled himself, and said: 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him: 'Lord, come and see.' And Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said: 'Behold how he loved him.' But some of them said: 'Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have caused that this man should not die?' Jesus therefore, again groaning within himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed upon it. Jesus said: 'Take away the stone.' Martha, the sister of him who had died, said to him:
141:6
Doiniue, jam fetet, quatriduanus enim es!. Dicit ei Jesus: Nonne disti tibi quoniam si credideris. videbis gloriam Dei? Tulerunt ergo lapidem. Jesus autem clevaiis sursum oculis, dixit: Pater, tibi gratias ago, quoniam audisti me. Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis; sed propter populum qui circumstat, dixi: ut credant quia tu me misisti. Hæc cum dixisSet, voce magna clamavit: Lazare, veni foras.
'Lord, by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days.' Jesus said to her: 'Did I not tell you that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?' They therefore took away the stone. And Jesus, lifting up his eyes, said: 'Father, I give you thanks that you have heard me. And I knew that you always hear me; but because of the people who stand around, I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.' When he had said this, he cried out with a loud voice: 'Lazarus, come forth.' And immediately he who had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with bandages; and his face was bound with a cloth. Jesus said to them: 'Loose him and let him go.' Many therefore of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
141:7
But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said: 'What are we doing, for this man does many signs? If we let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take away our place and nation.' But one of them, Caiaphas by name, being high priest that year, said to them: 'You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.' Now this he did not say of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation; and not only for the nation, but that he might gather into one the children of God who were scattered.
141:8
From that day therefore they took counsel to put him to death. Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went away into a region near the desert, into a city which is called Ephrem; and there he stayed with his disciples. Now the Passover of the Jews was near; and many went up to Jerusalem from the region before the Passover, to sanctify themselves. They sought therefore Jesus, and conversed with one another, standing in the temple: 'What do you think, that he has not come to the feast?' The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, so that they might seize him.
