And he was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders of the people sought to destroy him; and they could not find what they might do to him, for all the people hung upon him, hearing him. The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things about him. And the chief priests and the Pharisees sent ministers to apprehend him. Jesus therefore said to them: 'Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him who sent me. You shall seek me and shall not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.' The Jews therefore said among themselves: 'Where is this man about to go, that we shall not find him? Will he go into the dispersion of the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
What is this saying that he said: You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, you cannot come?' Now on the last great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying: 'If anyone thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture says (Joel 2:23), out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.' But this he said of the Spirit, which they who believed in him were to receive. For as yet the Spirit was not given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Some of that multitude therefore, when they had heard these words of his, said: 'This is truly the prophet.' Others said: 'This is the Christ.' But some said: 'Does the Christ come out of Galilee?'
Does not the Scripture say that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and out of Bethlehem, the town where David was (Mic. 5:2)?' So there was a division among the multitude because of him. And some of them wished to seize him, but no one laid hands on him. The ministers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and these said to them: 'Why have you not brought him?' The ministers answered: 'Never did a man speak as this man speaks.' The Pharisees therefore answered them: 'Are you also led astray? Has any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees? But this multitude, which does not know the law, are accursed.' Nicodemus said to them, he who came to him by night, who was one of them:
Does our law (Deut. 17:8; 19:15) judge a man, unless it first hear from him and know what he does?' They answered and said to him: 'Are you also a Galilean? Search and see, that out of Galilee no prophet arises.'
