(Matt. xiv, 15-23; Mark vi, 35-46; Luke ix, 12-17; John vi, 5-15.) Now when evening was come, the twelve drew near and said to Him: Send the multitudes away, that going into the towns and villages round about they may turn aside and find food, for here we are in a desert place. But Jesus said to them: They have no need to go; give you them to eat. Philip answered Him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread would not be enough for them, that every one might receive a little. And He said to them: How many loaves have you? One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Him: There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fishes; but what are these among so many? Unless perhaps we go and buy food for all this multitude.
And He said to them: Bring them hither to Me. And He commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to heaven, and blessed them, and broke, and gave to His disciples; and the disciples to the multitudes. And they all ate, and were filled. And they took up the leftovers, twelve baskets full of fragments. Now the number of them that had eaten was five thousand men, besides women and children. And straightway He bade the disciples go up into the boat and go before Him over the strait to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitudes away.

Those men therefore, when they had seen the sign which He had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet that is to come into the world. Jesus therefore, when He knew that they would come to take Him by force and make Him king, fled. And having sent the multitude away, He went up into a mountain alone to pray.
