102:1
Nam quia post mortem carnis vivat anima, patet ratio, sed fidei admista. Tres quippe vitales spiritus crcavii omnipotens Deus: unum qui carne non tegitur; alium qui carne tegitur, sed non cum carne ntoritur; tertium qui carne tegitur, et cum carne moritur. Spiritus namque est qui carne non legitur, angelorulu; spiritus qui carne tegitur, sed cum carne non moritur, hominum; spiritus qui carne legitur, et cum carne moritur, jumentorum omniumque brutorum animalium. Homo itaque sicut in medio creatus est, ut esset inferior angelo, superior jumento, ita aliquid habet commune cum summo, aliquid commune cum infimo: immorialitatem scilicet spiritus cum angelo, mortalitatem vero 'arnis cum jumento;
For that the soul lives after the death of the flesh, reason is manifest, but blended with faith. For almighty God created three living spirits: one which is not covered by flesh; another which is covered by flesh, but does not die with the flesh; a third which is covered by flesh, and dies with the flesh. The spirit which is not covered by flesh is that of the angels; the spirit which is covered by flesh, but does not die with the flesh, is that of men; the spirit which is covered by flesh, and dies with the flesh, is that of beasts of burden and of all brute animals. Man therefore, as he was created in the middle, so as to be lower than the angel, higher than the beast, so has something common with the highest, something common with the lowest: namely, the immortality of the spirit with the angel, but the mortality of the flesh with the beast;
至於靈魂在肉身死後仍然存活,理據是明顯的,卻摻雜著信德。因為全能的天主造了三種有生命的靈:一種不被肉體所包覆;另一種被肉體所包覆,卻不與肉體同死;第三種被肉體所包覆,並與肉體同死。那不被肉體所包覆的靈,是天使的靈;那被肉體所包覆卻不與肉體同死的靈,是人的靈;那被肉體所包覆並與肉體同死的靈,是牲畜和一切無理性動物的靈。所以人既被造於中間,好使他低於天使、高於牲畜,就有一部分與至高者相同,一部分與至低者相同:即與天使相同的靈之不朽,卻與牲畜相同的肉之必死;
102:2
376 quousque et ipsam niortalitatem carnis gloria resurrectionis absorbeat, et inhaerendo spiritui caro servetur in perpetuum, quia etipse spiritus inhaerendo carni servaiur in Deum. Quæ tamen caro nec in reprobis inter supplicia perfecte deiicit, Quia semper deficiendo subsistit; ut qui spiritu et carne peccaverunt, semper essentialiter viventes, et carne et spiritu sine fine moriantur. PETR. Rationi fidelium placent cuncta quæ dicis. Sed quæso te, dum spritus hominum atque jumentorum b tanta distinctione discernas, quid est quod Salomon ait: Dixi in corde meo de filiis hominum, ut probaret eos Deus, et os enderet similes esae bestiis;
until the glory of the resurrection shall absorb even that mortality of the flesh, and, by cleaving to the spirit, the flesh be preserved forever, because the spirit itself also, by cleaving to the flesh, is preserved unto God. Yet this flesh does not perfectly fail even in the reprobate amid their torments, because it ever subsists by failing; so that those who have sinned in spirit and flesh, ever essentially living, may in both flesh and spirit die without end. PETER: All that you say is pleasing to the reason of the faithful. But I ask you, since you distinguish the spirits of men and of beasts of burden with so great a distinction, what is it that Solomon says: 'I said in my heart concerning the sons of men, that God would prove them, and show them to be like the beasts;
直到復活的榮耀吞滅那肉體的必死,並且藉著依附於靈,肉體得以永遠存留,因為那靈自身也藉著依附於肉體,得以存留而歸於天主。然而這肉體即使在被棄絕者受苦刑之中,也不完全消滅,因為它總是在消滅中存續;以致那些在靈與肉中犯了罪的人,本質上永遠活著,卻在肉與靈中無盡地死。伯多祿:你所說的一切都合乎信者的理性。但我問你,既然你以如此大的區別來分辨人的靈與牲畜的靈,那麼撒羅滿所說的是什麼意思:「我心裡論及世人說,天主要試驗他們,並指明他們與走獸相似;
102:3
for this reason the destruction of man and of beasts is one, and the condition of both is equal' (Eccl. III, 18)? Still pursuing that same sentence of his subtly, he adds: 'As man dies, so also do these die; all things breathe alike, and man has nothing more than the beasts' (Ibid., 19). To which words he still subjoins a general definition, saying: 'All are subject to vanity, and all go to one place; of earth they were made, and into earth they return alike' (Ibid.).
