124:1
Terribile etiam qulddam in Valeriae provincia contigisse vir vitæ venerabilisMaximianus, Syracusanos episcopus, qui diu in hac urbe meo monasierio praefuit, narrare consuevit, dicens: Quidam t Curialis illic sacratissimo paschali Sabbato jnvenculam cujusdam liliam in baptismate suscepit. Qui post jejunium domum reversus, multoque vino inebriatus, eamdem filiam suam secum manere petit, eamque nocte illa (quod dictu nefas est perdidit. Cumque mane iacto surrexisset, reus cogitare coepit ut ad balneum pergeret. ac si aqua balnei lavaret maculam peccati. Perrexit ig tur, lavit, coepitque trepidare ecclesialn ingredi. Sed si tanto die non iret ad ecc!esiam, erube:cehat homines;
A certain terrible thing too that happened in the province of Valeria, Maximian, a man of venerable life, bishop of Syracuse, who for a long time presided over my monastery in this city, used to relate, saying: 'A certain member of the town council there, on the most holy Paschal Saturday, received a young girl, the daughter of a certain man, at baptism. This man, after the fast, having returned home and become drunk with much wine, asked that same god-daughter of his to remain with him, and that night—which is a shame even to tell—he ruined her. And when he had risen the next morning, guilty, he began to think of going to the baths, as if by the water of the bath he might wash away the stain of his sin. He went therefore, washed, and began to tremble at entering the church. But if on so great a day he did not go to church, he was ashamed before men;'
124:2
but if he did go, he greatly feared the judgment of the Lord. Human shame therefore prevailed, and he went to the church: but he began to stand trembling and afraid, and at each single moment he was in suspense as to at what hour he would be handed over to the unclean spirit and be tormented before all the people. And when he feared vehemently, nothing adverse happened to him during that celebration of the Mass. He went out joyful, and on the next day he entered the church now secure. And it came to pass that for six continuous days he went about joyful and secure, supposing that the Lord either had not seen his crime, or had mercifully forgiven it. But on the seventh day he died a sudden death.
124:3
PETR.
And when he had been committed to burial, for a long time, while all beheld, a flame came forth from his tomb, and so long did it consume his bones, until it destroyed the whole sepulchre, and the earth which had been gathered into a mound seemed to be dug away. This, indeed, almighty God, in doing it, showed what his soul was suffering in secret, whose body also, before human eyes, the flame consumed. In which matter He also deigned to give to us who hear these things an example of dread, so that from this consideration we may gather what a living and feeling soul suffers for its guilt, if by so great a punishment of fire even insensible bones are consumed. PETER:
I should like to know whether the good recognize the good in the kingdom, or the wicked recognize the wicked in their punishment.
