Gregorius innocentio a Africae praefecto. Qui pravorum actuum eminentiam vestram vind! cem esse desiderat, quid de æquitatis ejus bono sentiat æstimatis. Proinde reverendissimi fratris et coepiscopi nostri Victoris, b Fausianensis episcopi, plenam vobis doloribus querelam deferimus, ut et malos c ab actione per opera corrigatis, et ab injustitia quam sustinent, oppressos eruatis. Queritur siquidem supradictus frater noster d multas in loci. suis violentias, multaque alia Q contra edicti morem Africanos judices exercere; denique ut duplicia illic tributa, quod auditu ipso intolerandum est, exigantur.
Gregory to Innocent, prefect of Africa. He who desires your Eminence to be the avenger of wicked deeds, shows what he thinks of the good of your equity. Accordingly we bring before you, full of griefs, the complaint of our most reverend brother and fellow-bishop Victor, bishop of Fausiana, that you may both correct the wicked from their conduct through your works, and rescue the oppressed from the injustice which they endure. For our aforesaid brother complains that many violences, and many other things contrary to the manner of the edict, are practised by the African judges in his places; and finally, that double tributes—a thing intolerable in the very hearing—are there exacted.

Et quia hujus mali cmendatio vestræ specialiter auctoritatem dignitatis exspectat, petimus ut et subtili indagatione perquirere, et ita hoc Deo vobis imperante debeatis corrigere; quatenus afflictis et pro mercede animae vestræ protectione justitiæ succurratis, 1096 et hujus emendationis exemplo alios de futuro a pravis actionibus arceatis. f Mense octobri, indict. 4.
And since the correction of this evil especially awaits the authority of your dignity, we ask that you both search it out with subtle investigation, and, God commanding it through you, so correct it, that you may succour the afflicted, for the reward of your soul, with the protection of justice, and by the example of this correction may keep others in future from wicked actions.
