Gregorius Joanni Ravennati episcopo, etc. Pervenit all me (Grat. 18, q. i, c. 26) n quod ill Ecclesia fraternitatis tuæ aliqua loca dudum monaster is consecrata nunc habitacula clericorum aut etiam laicorum facta sunt; dumque hi qui sunt in ecclesiis fingunt se religiose vivere, monasteriis præpont appetunt, ei per eorum vitam monasteria destruuntur. Nemo b etenim (Grat. 16, q. i, c. 5) potest et c ecclesiasticis obsequiis deservire, et in monachica regula ordinate persistere, ut ipse monasterio districtionem teneat qui quotidie d in mona sterio ecclesiastico cogitur permanerP.
Gregory to John, Bishop of Ravenna, etc. It has come to me that in the Church of your Fraternity certain places long ago consecrated as monasteries have now been made into dwellings of clerics or even of laymen; and while those who are in the churches feign to live religiously, they seek to be set over the monasteries, and through their manner of life the monasteries are destroyed. For no one can both serve ecclesiastical duties and persist orderly in the monastic rule, so that he himself should keep the strictness of the monastery who is daily compelled to remain in ecclesiastical service.
額我略致拉溫納主教若望等。有事傳到我這裡，就是在你弟兄之情的教會中，某些從前被祝聖為修道院的地方，如今已被改為聖職人員甚至俗人的住所；那些在教會中的人一面假裝過虔修的生活，一面卻妄求管轄修道院，且藉他們的生活方式使修道院遭到破壞。因為無人能既服事教會的職務，又有秩序地持守修道的規章，以致一個每日被迫留在教會服事中的人，竟能持守修道院的嚴格。

Proinde fraternitas tua boc, quolibet in loco factum sit, emendare festinet, quia ego nullo modo patiar ut loca sacra per clericorum ambitum destruantur. Vos itaque ita agite, ut mihi hac de re correctam causam sub celeritate nuntietis. (Cr. Joan. Diac. l. lit re. 54.)
Accordingly, let your Fraternity hasten to amend this, in whatever place it has been done, for I will in no way suffer that sacred places be destroyed through the ambition of clerics. You, therefore, so act that you announce to me with speed that the matter has been set right in this regard. (Compare John the Deacon, Book III, ch. 54.)
