Gregorius Petro subdiacono Campaniae. Queritur * Festus frater et coepiscopus noster b a suis se clericis ac civibus despici atque contemni. Pro qua re experientiæ tuae praecipimus ut tranquilla eos adhortatione convenias, 649 quatenus seda. tis, si quæ forte odiorum causae sunt, mutua eos et Deo placita charitate concilies, ut et ille quod liliis decet impendat, et illi qnod patri oportet exhibeant. Gregory to Peter, subdeacon of Campania. Festus, our brother and fellow bishop, complains that he is despised and held in contempt by his own clergy and townsmen. On which account we command your Experience to approach them with tranquil exhortation, so that, if perchance there be any causes of hatred, once these are settled, you may reconcile them in mutual charity pleasing to God, that both he may bestow what befits sons, and they may render what is fitting toward a father. But if there be any other causes, we command you to lend your support to the aforesaid bishop, saving nevertheless justice and equity. In the month of May, in the second indiction.
