Gregorius Anthemio subdiacono Campaniae. Petrus clericus, lator præsentium, questus est nobis a quibusdam se puens fallaciter criminatum, et causam suam non ut oportuit districta examinatione discussam, nec se ab aliquo condemnatum, sed solum ab episcopo suo, ne cum eo procedere auderet, inhibitum. Quod audientes omnino aegre tulimus, quia, ventate subliliter perquisita, aut reum ut causae exigebat qualitas condemnare, aut certe debuit inDocentem absolvere.
Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon of Campania. Peter the clergyman, bearer of these presents, has complained to us that he was falsely accused by certain boys, and that his case was neither discussed, as it ought to have been, by strict examination, nor was he condemned by anyone, but only forbidden by his own bishop lest he should dare to proceed with him. Hearing which we took it altogether ill, because, the truth being subtly investigated, he ought either to have condemned him as guilty as the quality of the case required, or certainly to have absolved him as innocent.
額我略致坎帕尼亞副執事安特米烏。本函持信人、神職人員伯多祿向我們控訴說：他被某些僮僕誣告，而他的案件既沒有按理應有的方式經嚴格審查加以查究，他也沒有被任何人定罪，只是被他自己的主教禁止，不許他膽敢與其同行公務。我們聽了這事甚為不快，因為若把真相細加查究，他本應或按案件的性質將他定為有罪，或必當開釋他為無辜。

Quia igitur et causa exigit, et memoratus portitor magnopere postulat ut hac de re subtilis debeat haberi discussio, praesenti tibi auctoritate praecipimus ut una cum reverendissimo fratre nostro Fortunato coepiscopo, atque si visum tibi fuerit, glorioso filio nostro Maurentio, attentati criminis veritatem subtili nimis indagatione ac discussione studealis addifcere; et ita aut culpam ulcisci, aut festinetis a innocentiam relevare, ut nec vos videamini negligentes in aliquo exstitisse nec hæc amplius sine definitione causa remaneat.
Since therefore both the case demands it, and the aforementioned bearer greatly requests that a subtle investigation should be made concerning this matter, we command you by present authority that, together with our most reverend brother and fellow bishop Fortunatus, and, if it seem good to you, our glorious son Maurentius, you should strive by very subtle inquiry and investigation to learn the truth of the attempted crime; and so either to punish the fault or hasten to relieve the innocence, that you may neither appear to have been negligent in anything, nor that this case may remain any longer without definition.
因此，既然案件既有此要求，且上述持信人也極力請求對此事作精細的查究，我們便以現有的權柄命令你：與我們可敬的弟兄兼同工主教福圖納圖斯，並且，若你認為合宜，也與我們榮耀的兒子毛倫提烏一同，殷勤設法以極精細的探詢與查究查明所控之罪的真相；如此，或懲治過犯，或速速昭雪無辜，好使你既不致顯出在任何事上有所疏忽，也不致使這案件再無裁決地拖延下去。
