Gregorius a Andreæ. Audiens quod gloriam vestram vehementer afflixerit luctus et ægritudo, valde condolui. Sed protinus agnoscens b quod perfecte reliquerit, dolorem mox iu lætitiam verti, magnasque omnipotenti Deo gratias rctuli, quia percussit ut sanarct, afflixit ut ad gaudia vera perduceret. Itine enim scriptum est: Quem diligit Dominus casligat, flagellat autem omnem filium quem recipit (Heb. XII, 6). Hine per semetipsam Veritasdicit: Paler meus agricola est, et omnem palmitem in me non fe. entem fructum, tollet eum; omnem vero <l ii fert fructum, purgabil eum, ut fructum plus afferat (Joan. I, 1, 2). Palmes enim iufructuosus tollitur, quia peccaLor funditus cradicatur.
Gregory to Andreas. Hearing that grief and sickness had vehemently afflicted your glory, I greatly grieved with you. But immediately recognizing that he departed in perfect state, my grief was soon turned to joy, and I rendered great thanks to God almighty, because he smote in order to heal, and afflicted in order to lead to true joys. For thus it is written: Whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth; and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth (Heb. 12:6). Hence through himself the Truth says: My Father is the husbandman, and every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take it away; but every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit (John 15:1-2). For the unfruitful branch is taken away, because the sinner is utterly rooted out.
額我略致安德肋。聽聞悲傷與疾病曾劇烈地折磨你的榮耀，我深切地與你同悲。但我一認清他是在完美的境況中離世，我的悲傷便隨即化為喜樂，我也向全能的天主獻上極大的感謝，因祂擊打是為醫治，加以磨難是為引向真正的喜樂。因為經上如此記著說：『主所愛的，祂必管教；祂所接納的每個兒子，祂都鞭打』（希伯來書十二6）。故此真理藉自己說：『我父是園丁，凡在我身上不結果子的枝條，祂就剪去；凡結果子的，祂就修剪潔淨，使它結更多的果子』（若望福音十五1-2）。因為不結果子的枝條被剪去，乃因罪人被連根拔除。

Palmes vero fructuosus purgari dicitur, quia per disciplinam reciditur, ut ad uberiorem gratiam perducatur. Sic enim spicarum grana tribulis attrita, aristis et paleis nudantur. Sic olivæ praelo pressae in olei pinguedinem defluunt. Sic botrl vinearum tunsi calcibus in vinun liquescunt. Gaude igitur, bone vir, quia in hoc flagello tuo et provectu conspicis quod ab æterno judlce amaris. Præterea filiam meam Gluriosam, conjugem vestram, mea peto vice salutari. Omnipotens autem Deus cœlesti vos protectione custodiat, vosque et modo consoletur de largitate donorum, et postmodum de retributione praemiorum.
But the fruitful branch is said to be purged, because through discipline it is pruned, that it may be brought to more abundant grace. For thus the grains of the ears, threshed on the threshing-floor, are stripped of husks and chaff. Thus the olives, pressed in the press, flow down into the richness of oil. Thus the clusters of the vineyards, trodden by heels, dissolve into wine. Rejoice therefore, good man, because in this your scourging and advancement you behold that you are loved by the eternal Judge. Moreover I ask that my daughter Gloriosa, your wife, be greeted in my stead. And may God almighty guard you with heavenly protection, and console you both now by the bounty of gifts, and hereafter by the recompense of rewards.
但結果子的枝條被說是受修剪潔淨，乃因它藉管教而被剪除，好使它被引向更豐盛的恩典。因為麥穗的子粒在打穀場上被打，便脫去了外殼與糠秕。橄欖在榨中被壓，便流成豐潤的油。葡萄園的果串被腳踹，便化為酒。所以，善人哪，你當歡喜，因為在這你所受的鞭打與長進中，你看見自己是被那永恆的審判者所愛。此外，我請你代我向我的女兒、你的妻子格洛利奧撒問安。願全能的天主以屬天的保護看守你們，並使你們現今因恩賜的慷慨得安慰，日後因賞報的酬報得安慰。
