Gregorius a Paulo episcopo. Licet non mediocriter nos contristaverit cognita quam es perpessus injuria, habemus aliquam tamen consolationis materiam, quod laudem tuam huic rei inesse cognovimus, ob id quod pro aequitatis rectitudine hoc, quantum directa 625 nobis patefecit relatio, pertulisti. Ut ergo ad majorem fraternitatis tuae gloriam applicetur, haec res constantiam tuam nec frangere, nee a via debet veritatis avertere. Nam major in sacerdotibus merces est, in veritatis tramito etiam post injurias permanere.
Gregory to Paul the bishop. Although the injury which you have suffered, now made known, has grieved us not moderately, yet we have some material for consolation, in that we have learned that your praise is present in this matter, because of the fact that you endured this for the uprightness of equity, as far as the report sent to us has made clear. Therefore, that it may be added to the greater glory of your fraternity, let this matter neither break your constancy nor turn you aside from the way of truth. For among priests the reward is greater, to remain on the path of truth even after injuries.
貴格利致主教保羅。你所受的傷害既已為人所知，雖令我們憂傷不淺，然我們仍有些許安慰之由，因我們得知你在此事上是可稱讚的，緣於就那送達我們的報告所明示的，你乃是為公義的正直而忍受了此事。故願此事得以增添你弟兄之情更大的榮耀，切莫讓它折損你的堅定，亦莫使你偏離真理之道。因為在祭司中間，即使遭受傷害後仍持守於真理之途，其賞賜更大。

Ac ne tanta impie'atis insania inulta remaneat, et in pejus indisciplinatio perniciosa prorumpat, Scholastico b viro magnifico Campaniae judici, quia hic praesens inventus cst, ut haec digna coercitione vindicare debuisset, injunximus. Sed quia homines tui a nobis ut personam c dirigere debuissemus petiverunt, propterea Epiphanium subdiaconum illuc nos transmisisse cognosce, qui una cum suprascripto judice investigare valeat, ac cognoscere veritatem, quatenus in eos a quibus tantum facinus immissum constiterit, vel perpetratum, sua instantia dignam faciat exerceri vindictam. And lest so great a madness of impiety remain unpunished, and the pernicious lack of discipline break forth into worse, we have charged Scholasticus, a magnificent man, judge of Campania — because he was found here present — that he ought to avenge these things with worthy coercion. But because your men asked of us that we should send a person, know therefore that we have sent thither the subdeacon Epiphanius, who together with the above-written judge may be able to investigate and to learn the truth, so that against those by whom so great a crime is established to have been introduced or perpetrated, he may by his own diligence cause a worthy vengeance to be exercised.
