Gregorius Romano defensori. Quoniam filius noster Gentio vir magnificus scribo tantae, Deo propitio, bonitatis est ut valde sit diligendus, si quid ei potuissemus conferre, deLuimus. Volucrat enim possessionem juris ecclesiastici a sub specie libellorum tenere. Sed propter malos scribones judicavimus in hac nos causa nec bono committere. Proinde excepta de poMessione quae potucrunt in ejus utilitatem verti, eadem volumus ejus magnitudini singulis annis offerri, id est, porcos viginti, qualiter ipse praevideris, b vervices viginti, et gallinas sexaginta. Quæ omnia volumus in exceptis reputari.
Gregory to Romanus the defensor. Since our son Gentio, a magnificent man, the scribo, is—God being propitious—of such great goodness that he is greatly to be loved, we ought, if we could confer anything upon him, to have done so. For he had wished to hold a possession of ecclesiastical right under the form of leases. But on account of wicked scribos we judged it best not, in this matter, to entrust it even to a good man. Accordingly, excepting from the possession those things which could be turned to his advantage, we wish the same to be offered to his Magnitude each year—that is, twenty pigs, in such manner as you yourself shall provide, twenty wethers, and sixty hens. All of which we wish to be reckoned among the exceptions.
額我略致護民官羅馬努斯。既然我們的兒子、尊貴之人、書記官根提奧——蒙天主眷佑——具有如此崇高的良善，以致他極其可愛，那麼我們若能施予他什麼，本就理當如此行。因為他曾願以租約的形式持有一份屬教會權下的產業。但因那些惡劣的書記官之故，我們判定在此事上，即使託付給一位良善之人也為不宜。因此，從該產業中撥出那些可用於他益處之物，我們願每年獻給閣下，即：二十頭豬（按你自己所籌措的方式）、二十隻閹羊、以及六十隻母雞。這一切我們願都算作除外保留之物。
