Gregorius ordini et plebi consistenti Ncapoli. Quale a de Paulo fratre et coepiscopo nostro haIxat charitas vestra judicium, directa a vobis relatio j atefecil. Quem quoniam ita estis in paucis diehus experti, ut eum cardinalcm habere dcsidcretis episcopum, gratulamur. Sed quia summis in rebus ci um non oportet esse consilium, et nos quid fiendum sit matura subinde, Christo adjuvante, deliberatione disponimus, et vobis melius tractu temporis qu alem se exhibeat innotescit.
Gregory to the clergy and people residing at Naples. What judgement your charity has formed concerning our brother and fellow-bishop Paul, the report you have sent has made plain. And since you have tested him in these few days to such a degree that you desire to have him as your resident bishop, we rejoice. But because in matters of the highest importance the decision ought not to be a hasty one, we too are arranging, with Christ's help, by mature and careful deliberation, what ought to be done; and with the passage of time it will become better known to you of what quality he shows himself to be.
額我略致居於那不勒斯的聖職人員與百姓。你們對我們的弟兄和同為主教的保祿抱持何種評斷，你們所寄來的報告已使之明白。既然你們在這短短數日之內已如此考驗過他，以致渴望有他作你們常駐的主教，我們甚感欣慰。然而，因為在至為重要的事上不宜有倉促的決定，我們也正藉著基督的幫助，以成熟而審慎的斟酌來安排當行之事；而隨著時日的推移，他究竟顯出何等品格，你們也將更清楚地知曉。

Ideoque, filii dilectiss ini, prædicto viro, si eum vere diligitis, obedite, devotisque ad eum mentibus occursione pacifica convtnite, quatenus ita 575 vos ad alterutrum dilectio mutuæ charitatis astringat, ut inimicus suviendo circumvoluns in nullo vestrum viam nanciscatur ad dissociandam unanimitatem qua subrepat. Praefatum quoque episcopum dum fructum animarum, quem desideramus, Deo nostro, ipso quoque suffragante, facere senserimus, quidquid post hæc de ejus porsona vestroque desiderio cordi nostro inspiratio divina ministraverit, facil'mus.
Therefore, most beloved sons, obey the aforesaid man, if you truly love him, and with devout minds come to meet him in a peaceful encounter, so that the love of mutual charity may so bind you to one another that the enemy, circling about to lay snares, may in none of you find a way to creep in and to break apart your unanimity. And when we shall have perceived that the aforesaid bishop is producing, by God's aid and his own, the fruit of souls which we desire for our God, then whatever after this the divine inspiration shall minister to our heart concerning his person and your desire, we shall do.
所以，至親愛的兒女們，若你們真心愛戴上述那人，就當服從他，並以虔敬之心以和睦的態度前去迎接他，好使彼此相愛之情如此將你們互相繫連，以致那環伺設下陷阱的仇敵，在你們中間無一人身上得著可乘之隙來潛入、破壞你們的同心。而當我們察覺上述主教藉著天主的幫助與他自己的努力，正結出我們為我們的天主所渴望的靈魂之果實時，此後凡神聖的默感就他的身分及你們的願望所賜於我們心中的一切，我們必照著去行。
