443:1
Gregory to Arigius, Patrician of Gaul. How great is the goodness in you, and how great the gentleness that shines forth with a charity pleasing to Christ, we have learned from the report of Augustine, servant of God and bearer of this letter; and we give thanks to almighty God, who has bestowed these gifts of His loving-kindness upon you, through which you may be able to be both greatly praiseworthy among men and glorious in His sight, which is truly profitable. We therefore pray the almighty Lord that He may multiply in you these gifts which He has bestowed, and may guard you with all yours by His protection, and so order the conduct of your Glory in this world that it may profit you both here and, what is more to be desired, in the life to come.
443:2
Salutantes itaque gloriam vestram paterna dulcedine potimus ut lator præsentium, et servi Dei qni cum co sunt, vestra in quibus necesse ruerit solatia consequantur, quatenus Uum vestrmn favorem invenerint, injuncta sibi melius, adjuvante Domino, valeant adimplere. Præterea filium nostrum Candidum presbyterum, quem ad gubernationem patrimonii Ecclesiæ nostræ, quod illic cst, transmisimus, vobis per omnia commendamus; confidentes a Deo nostro vos mercedis vicem recipere, si b rebus pauperum solatia sua gloria vestra devota mente præstiterit.
Greeting therefore your Glory with fatherly sweetness, we ask that the bearer of this letter, and the servants of God who are with him, may obtain your comfort in whatever shall be needful, so that, when they have found your favour, they may, with the Lord's help, be the better able to fulfil what has been enjoined upon them. Furthermore, we commend to you in all things our son Candidus the priest, whom we have sent for the governance of the patrimony of our Church that is there; trusting that you will receive from our God a recompense of reward, if your Glory shall with a devout mind afford its comfort to the goods of the poor.
