820:1
Gregory to the patrician Eusebia. Even if your mind, occupied with riches, or perhaps by the tumultuous entanglements of the royal city, puts off visiting us by its letters, it is nevertheless ours to pursue even the averted hearts of our sons with sweet charity, and to recall them to a kindly disposition both by admonishing and by praying. Wherefore now, paying the debt of a salutary address, I exhort that your Excellency turn your mind away from the superfluous tumults of that city, and think more of the things which are of the soul than of those which are of the body. Let her weigh that all things are transitory.
Let her daily, without ceasing, consider with fear and tears the dread examination of the Judge to come, and bring back to mind with fear that day on which all things are to be thrown into confusion, so that she may not fear the wrath of the Judge on that very day. And may Almighty God pour these thoughts into your cogitations by the inspiration of His Spirit, and may He make you both to live tranquilly here with your most noble husband, and to rejoice in the safety of the lord Strategius, and after long times to attain to the eternal rewards.
