Gregorius Joanni episcopo Panormitano. Apostolicæ sedis benevolentia provocati, fraternitati tuae, quam Panormitanae Ecclesiæ a speculatoris constat suscepisse officium, pallii usum praevidimus concedendum, illis videlicet 1244 temporibus, atque eo ordine, ut alios quoque insulse Siciliae sacerdotes vel decessores tuos usos esse non ambigi*. Illud autem admonemus, ut apostolicae sedis revelentia nullius præsumptione turbetur.
Gregory to John, bishop of Palermo. Moved by the benevolence of the Apostolic See, we have foreseen that the use of the pallium is to be granted to your Fraternity, who is known to have undertaken the office of watchman of the Church of Palermo—namely, at those times, and in that order, in which it is not doubted that the other bishops of Sicily and your predecessors also used it. But this we admonish, that the reverence of the Apostolic See be not disturbed by the presumption of anyone.

Tunc enim status membrorum integer manet, b si caput fidei nulla pulset injuria, et c canonum maneat incolumis atque intemerata semper auctoritas, ut sicut a nobis hujuscemodi decoris usum ad sacerdotalis officii honorem accepisse te gaudes, ita etiam morum atque actuum probitate susceptum adornare contendas officium. Sic etenim alterno eris invicem decore conspicuus, si ad hujuscemodi corporis habituul mentis quoque tuae bona concordent.
For then does the state of the members remain whole, if no injury assails the head of the faith, and if the authority of the canons remains unimpaired and forever inviolate; so that just as you rejoice to have received from us the use of this kind of adornment for the honor of the priestly office, so also you may strive to adorn the office you have received by uprightness of morals and of deeds. For thus you will be conspicuous with a mutual and reciprocal comeliness, if your mind's good qualities also accord with this kind of bodily attire.
因為肢體的情狀惟有在信仰的元首不受任何損傷、教規的權威保持完好而永遠不受玷污時，才能保全完整；如此，正如你因得著我們所賜這種裝飾的使用權、為著司鐸職分的尊榮而歡喜，你也照樣當竭力以品德與行為的正直來裝飾你所領受的職分。因為你若使心靈的美善也與這種身體的裝束相符，你就必以彼此交相輝映的華美而顯赫出眾。
