72:1
GREGORIUS. Neque boc, Petre, sileam quod multi nunc qui hic de Narniensi civitate adsunt mihi sedulo testificantur. Eodem namque Gothorum tempore cum praefatus rex Totila e Narniam venisset, ei vir vitae venerabilis Cassius cjusdem urbis episcopus occurrit. Cui quia t ei conspersione semper facies rubere consueverat, hoc rex Totila non conspersionis esse credidit, sed assiduæ potationis, eumque omnimodo despexit. Sed omnipotens Deus, ut quantus vir esset qui despiciebatur ostenderet, in Narniensi campo quo rex advenerat, malignus spiritus coram omni exercitu ejus a spatharium invasit, eamque vexare crudeliter cœpit.
GREGORY: Neither would I be silent, Peter, about this which many now present here from the city of Narni earnestly testify to me. For in that same time of the Goths, when the aforesaid king Totila had come to Narni, Cassius, bishop of that same city, a man of venerable life, met him. Because his face was always accustomed to redden from a naturally ruddy complexion, king Totila believed this to be not from complexion but from constant drinking, and utterly despised him. But Almighty God, that He might show how great a man he was who was despised, in the field of Narni where the king had come, in the presence of his whole army an evil spirit seized a swordsman, and began cruelly to torment him.
額我略：伯多祿啊，關於這事我也不願緘默，就是如今在此、許多從納爾尼城來的人所殷切向我作證的。因為在那同一哥特人的時代，前述的王托提拉來到納爾尼時，那城的主教、生活可敬之人加西烏斯前來迎接他。因他的臉素來因天生紅潤的膚色而發紅，托提拉王便以為這不是出於膚色，而是出於常常飲酒，就大大鄙視他。但全能的天主，為要顯明這受鄙視之人是何等偉大，在王所到的納爾尼曠野，當著他全軍之前，有一惡靈附在一名持劍衛士身上，開始殘忍地折磨他。

Qui cum ante regis oculos ad veo nerandum virum Cassium fuisset adductas, hunc 289 ab eo vir Domini oratione facta, signo crucis expulet, qui in eum ingredi ulterius non præsumpsit. Sicque factum est ut rex barbarus servum Dei ab illo jan die veneraretur ex corde, quem despectum valde judicabat ex facie. Nam quia virum tantae virtutis vidit, erga illum illa mens effera ab elationis fastu detumuit.
When he had been brought before the king's eyes to the venerable man Cassius, the man of the Lord, having made prayer, drove him out by the sign of the cross, and the spirit did not presume to enter into him any further. And so it came to pass that the barbarian king from that day venerated from his heart the servant of God, whom he had judged utterly despicable from his face. For because he saw a man of such great power, that fierce mind of his subsided from the arrogance of pride toward him.
當那衛士被帶到王眼前、來到可敬者加西烏斯面前時，主的僕人祈禱之後，藉十字聖號把那惡靈趕出，那靈就不敢再進入他裡面。於是事就這樣成了：這蠻族之王從那日起，便從心裡敬重這位天主的僕人，就是他先前憑外貌斷定為極可鄙的人。因他既見一位有如此大能的人，他那兇猛的心便從驕傲的高傲中平息下來，向他收斂了。
