428:1
Gregorius Dono episcopo Messanensi.
Gregory to Donus, bishop of Messina. George, the bearer of the present letter, desiring, as he says, to dwell in your city, has begged to be commended to your Fraternity by our letter. Since he has promised to restrain himself from depraved conduct, we have foreseen that what he sought ought not to be denied. And therefore let your Holiness be zealous to be solicitous for God's sake concerning his soul, and by your exhortations to recall him to a way pleasing to God; and if, the Lord aiding, as he has promised, refraining himself from all depravity, he shall be willing to live honestly, let your Fraternity, for your own reward, according as you shall have provided, come to the aid of his sustenance, lest perchance he seem to take up for himself an excuse for doing evil out of necessity.
But let your Fraternity consider what you may have to suffer from his importunity—he who came to you with our letters, whom we ourselves, without any authority, endured as exceedingly importunate in his entreaty.
