Gregorius nobilibus Syracusanis. Laudis vestrae testimonium a quam direxistis gerit vos onera epistola, quod ełectionis sapienter declinasse significat. Et quoniam nostro hoc arbitrio commbistis, ac multa bona de vcnerandæ memoriae quondam Maximiano episcopo 753 referentes talem vobis ordinari depuscitis, vos quidem sicut decet fideles filios rachis, quia hæc de digno sollici- toque patre testamini, et obtrectantibus aliis bona ipsius etiam post obitum non tacelis. Unde oramus omnipotentem Dominum, ut et vobis pro sinceritatis vestræ voluntate retribuat, et obloqueutibus clementer ignoscat.
Gregory to the nobles of Syracuse. The testimony of your praise which you have sent forth, the letter you directed bears; and it signifies that you have wisely declined the burdens of election. And since you have entrusted this to our judgment, and, relating many good things concerning Maximianus, the bishop of venerable memory now deceased, you ask that such a one be ordained for you, you indeed act as it becomes faithful sons to act, in that you testify these things concerning a worthy and solicitous father, and, though others disparage him, do not keep silent about his good qualities even after his death. Wherefore we pray the Almighty Lord, that He may both requite you according to the will of your sincerity, and mercifully pardon those who speak against him.

Hoc tamen sciat magnitudo vestra, quia civitati illi quem dare Maximiano reverendissimo similem non habemus. Sed quia a clero et plebe Ecclesiæ Syracusanæ Agatho, ab aliquibus autem alter cligitur, hunc qui a clero et plebe electus est ad nos iterum venire necesse est, ut utrisque cominus constitutis, ille qui Deo placuerit, et utilior visus fuerit, ordinetur. Nam desiderii nostri est talem illic cum Christi gratia ordinari pontificem, qui bonorum supradicti episcopi cujus vos actionibus testimonium perhibens in omnibus debeat, Deo adjulore, imitator existere.
Yet let your greatness know this: that for that city we do not have anyone to give like Maximianus most reverend. But since by the clergy and people of the Church of Syracuse Agatho is chosen, while by some others another is elected, it is necessary that he who has been elected by the clergy and people come to us again, so that, both being set before us in person, he who shall please God and shall have seemed more useful may be ordained. For it is our desire that such a pontiff be ordained there, with the grace of Christ, as ought, God helping, to be an imitator in all things of the good qualities of the aforesaid bishop, to whose actions you bear witness.
