Gregorius Joanni episcopo Syracusano. Ecclesiastici vigoris ordo confunditur, si aut te. mere illicila præsumantur, nut impune non concessa tententur. Pervenit itaque ad nos (Grat., dist. 93, c. 21) diaconos Ecclesiae Catanensis a calcialos cam. pagis procedere præsumpsisse; quod quia nulli ha. ctenus per totam Siciliam licuit, nisi solis tantum modo diaconis Ecclesiæ Messanensis, quibus olim a prædecessoribus nostris non dubitatur esse concessum, bene recolitis. Quia ergo tantae temeritatis ausus uon est leviter auendendus, cum omni hoc fraternitas vestra subtilitate perquirat;

The order of ecclesiastical discipline is thrown into confusion, if either things unlawful are rashly presumed, or things not conceded are attempted with impunity. It has therefore come to us that the deacons of the Church of Catania have presumed to proceed shod with sandals; which, because it has hitherto been permitted to none throughout all Sicily save only to the deacons of the Church of Messina, to whom it is not doubted to have been granted long ago by our predecessors, you well recall. Since, then, so daring an act of such rashness is not to be lightly overlooked, let your Fraternity inquire into this whole matter with all subtlety;
