Gregorius Bonifacio episcopo a Regiensi. Contumelia quidem sacerdotum est, de divinis cultibus admoneri. Quod evim ipsi debent 685 exiBere, turpiter exiguntur. Tamen ne, qnod non æltimamus, in aliquo fraternitas tua ea qoæ ad opus Dei pertinent negligat, de hoc ipso specialiter te prævidimus adhortandum. Admonemus itaque ut nullatenus clerus Resitanæ civitatis, in causis quas eorum poscit officium, fraternitatis tua remissione laxetur. Sed in iis quae ad Deum pertinent, inslantissime atque studiosissime compellantur.
Gregory to Boniface, bishop of Reggio. It is indeed an affront to priests to be admonished concerning divine worship. For what they themselves ought to render is shamefully exacted of them. Nevertheless, lest—which we do not suppose—your Fraternity should in anything neglect those things which pertain to the work of God, we have foreseen that you should be specially exhorted about this very matter. We admonish you, therefore, that the clergy of the city of Reggio be by no means loosened, through the remissness of your Fraternity, in the causes which their office demands. But in those things which pertain to God, let them be most urgently and most zealously compelled.

Opinionem quoque prædicti cleri tui studere te volumue, ut uihil de iis pravum, nihil quod contra eccłesiasticam disciplinam pertinet, audiatur;ad ornatum quippe ejus, non ad fœditatem actuum eorum pertinere debet officium. b Subdiaconis vero tuis ( Grat. dist. 32 c. 9) hoc quod de Siculis statuimus, decernimus observari; nec illam definitionem nostram cujusquam sinas contumacia aut temeritate corrumpi; quatenus dum praedicta omnia per te fuerint conserrata districtissime, nec admonitionis nostrae, sicut et credimus, transgressor existas, nec in quolibet reum te remissionis accuset pastoralis tibi cOlnmilius ordo regiminis.
We also wish you to be zealous for the reputation of your aforesaid clergy, so that nothing depraved concerning them, nothing that runs contrary to ecclesiastical discipline, may be heard; for their office ought to pertain to its adornment, not to the foulness of their acts. But to your subdeacons (Gratian, dist. 32, c. 9) we decree that what we have established concerning the Sicilians be observed; nor allow that definition of ours to be corrupted by anyone's contumacy or temerity; so that, when all the aforesaid have been most stringently preserved by you, you may neither be found a transgressor of our admonition, as we indeed trust, nor may the pastoral order of governance committed to you accuse you as guilty of remissness in any respect.
