(Admonitio 4.) Aliter admonendi sunt laeti, atque a iter tristes. Laetis videlicet inferenda sunt tristia quae sequuntur ex supplicio; tristibus vero inferenda sunt laeta quae promittuntur ex regno. Discant lae i ex minarum asperitate quod timeant; audiant tr i stes præmiorum gaudia de quibus praesumant. Illis quippe dicitur: Væ vobis qui ridetis nunc, quoniam flebitis ( Luc. vi, 25); isti vero eodem magistro docente audiunt: Iterum videbo vos, et gaudebit cor nestrum, et gaudium vestrum nemo tollet a vobis (Joan. XVI, 22). Nonnulli autem laeti vel tristes non rebus fiunt, sed b conspersionibus existunt. Quibus protecto intimandum est quod quaedam vitia quibusdam conspersionibus juxta sunt.
(Admonition 4.) In one way are the joyful to be admonished, in another the sad. To the joyful, namely, are to be brought forward the sad things that follow from punishment; but to the sad are to be brought forward the joyful things that are promised from the kingdom. Let the joyful learn from the harshness of threats what they should fear; let the sad hear the joys of rewards on which they may presume. For to the former it is said: Woe to you that laugh now, for you shall mourn (Luke 6:25); but the latter, taught by the same Master, hear: I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man shall take from you (John 16:22). But some are joyful or sad not from circumstances, but exist so from their temperaments. To such it must assuredly be intimated that certain vices are near to certain temperaments.
（勸誡四）喜樂的人當以一種方式勸誡，憂愁的人當以另一種方式。對喜樂的人，當提出那由刑罰而來的憂苦之事；對憂愁的人，當提出那由國度所應許的喜樂之事。願喜樂的人從恐嚇的嚴厲中學到當懼怕的事；願憂愁的人聽見那可指望的賞賜之樂。因為對前者說：「你們喜笑的人有禍了，因為你們將要哀慟哭泣。」（路六25）而後者受同一位師傅教導，卻聽見：「我要再見你們，你們的心就喜樂了，這喜樂也沒有人能奪去。」（約十六22）但有些人喜樂或憂愁並非出於處境，而是出於天性稟賦。對這等人，實在當指明某些惡習與某些稟賦相近相鄰。

Habent enim læti ei propinquo luxuriam, tristes iram. Unde necesse est ut noN solum quisque consideret quod ex conspersinne sustinet, sed etiam quod ex vicino deterius perurget; ne dum nequaquam pugnat contra hoe quod tolerat, ei quoque a quo se liberum aestimat, vitio succumbat.
For the joyful have close at hand luxury, the sad wrath. Whence it is necessary that each one consider not only what he suffers from his temperament, but also what worse thing presses hard upon him from the neighbouring vice; lest, while he in no wise contends against that which he endures, he succumb also to the vice from which he deems himself free.
因為喜樂的人身旁近有淫逸，憂愁的人身旁近有忿怒。因此，人人都必須不僅顧念自己因稟賦所受之苦，也顧念那由相鄰之惡習而更嚴厲逼迫他的事；免得他雖絲毫不抵擋所忍受的，卻也向那自以為得脫的惡習屈服敗降。
