Quia pervenit ad nos quod quidam a es Italiæ Ec. clesia clerici vasa sacra in Sicilia venundarunt, idcirco Pantaleonem notarium nostrum direximus, ut eadem vasa sollicita investigatione requireret. Qui postquam in vestrae sanctitatis est obsequio occupa. tus, eamdem causam eum cognovimus neglexisse. Oportet ergo ut fraternitas vestra congrua debeat sollicitudine providere, ut, tempore quo utile esse crediderit, eum ad peragenda ea ipsa debeat relaxare; quatenus et ipsa de illo possit habere solatium, et ipse salubriter valeat quae sibi sunt mandata Deo adjuvante peragere;
Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse. Since it has come to us that certain clerics of some church of Italy have sold sacred vessels in Sicily, we have therefore dispatched Pantaleo, our notary, to search out those same vessels by careful investigation. But after he was taken up in service to your Holiness, we have learned that he has neglected this same business. It behooves, therefore, your Fraternity to make suitable provision with due solicitude, so that, at the time you judge it useful, you may release him to carry out these very matters; so that you also may have consolation from him, and he himself may be able, with God's help, wholesomely to accomplish what has been entrusted to him;
