Gregorius a Caudentio episcopo Nolano. Qui ecclesiasticis famulantur ohseqlliis, ecclesiastica, ut possi! iii!as exigit, debent adipisci subsidia. Proinde fraternitatem tuarn præsentibus hortamur affatibus ut clericis Capuanae Ecclesiæ, qui in civitate Neapolitana consistunt, quartam in presbyterium eorum de hoc quod ante dictæ Ecclesiæ singulis annis accesserit juxta antiquam consuetudinem distribuere b secundam personarunt studeat quatitatem, quatenus aliquod stipendiorum habentes solatium, ministerium officiumque suum circa camdem Ecclesiam devotiori mente provocemur impendere.
Gregory to Gaudentius, bishop of Nola. Those who serve in ecclesiastical duties ought to obtain ecclesiastical support, as far as means allow. Therefore we exhort your Fraternity by these present words that, to the clergy of the Church of Capua who reside in the city of Naples, you take care to distribute a fourth part into their presbytery out of that which shall accrue each year to the aforesaid Church, according to ancient custom, apportioned according to the standing of the persons, so that, having some solace of stipends, we may be moved to render our ministry and office toward that same Church with a more devoted mind.

Præterea decem solidus, quos Rustico archidiacono suo Fuscus quondam episcopus suprascriptæ Ecclesiæ abstutit, fraternitas tua omni cessante anibiguitate restituat, quia in tantam dicitur cum pauperiem pervenisse, ut conferendum Hii potius esset quam aliquid ab co aufercluJuln. Duc um enim est et procul a sacerdotis officio et personam positam sub necessitate negligere, et studio congregandi indecenter inhiare pccuniis r. (Vide l. II, ep. 32.)
Moreover, let your Fraternity, all ambiguity ceasing, restore the ten solidi which Fuscus, the former bishop, took away from his archdeacon Rusticus of the above-named Church; for he is said to have come to such poverty that it were fitter to bestow something upon him than to take anything away from him. For it is a grievous thing, and far from the office of a priest, both to neglect a person placed under necessity, and unbecomingly to hanker after money out of a zeal for hoarding.
