Gregorius Hilario notario. Navem in qua Vitalis præsentium portitor navigat ad dilectissimam filiam nostram Adeodatam abbatissam, pro sustentatione monasterii sui emissam eognoscas. Qua illuc veniente, hac 1090 tibi auctoritate praecipimus ut ita eam in cunctis tuearis, atquo ab omni angaria vel onere eluere excusareque festines, ac si specialiter nostra sit. Nam nostri causa in eodem monasterio tanta congregatio, De > propitio, degere comprobatur, ut plus illi solatiari atque concurrere quam nostrae in omnibus festinemus Ecclesiæ.

Know that the ship in which Vitalis, the bearer of the present letter, sails, has been sent out to our most beloved daughter Adeodata the abbess for the support of her monastery. When it arrives there, we command you by this authority so to protect it in all things, and to make haste to free and excuse it from every forced service or burden, as though it were especially our own. For, God being favourable, so great a congregation is proven to dwell in that monastery for our sake, that we would hasten to comfort and assist it more than our own Church in all respects.

Et ideo postquam voluntatem nostram experientia tua circa prædictum monasterium talem esse cognoscit, ita se in tuitione supradictæ, ut diximus, navis impendat, ut te illic posito, nullam moram vel impedimentum ab aliquo valeat sustinere. Naui si, quod non credimus, in aliquo negligens esse teutaveris, vehemeotcr te nostram noveris offensatn incurrerc.
And therefore, since your Experience knows our will regarding the aforesaid monastery to be such, so exert yourself in the protection of the said ship, as we have said, that, you being posted there, it may be able to suffer no delay or hindrance from anyone. But if—which we do not believe—you should attempt to be in any way negligent, know that you will grievously incur our offence.
