324:1
Gregorius Maximiano episcopo Syracusano. Præsentiumlator Felix diaconus, cum nullatenus in hæreticorumdogma lapsus sit, nec a catholica fide discesserit, pravis illectus adversus a Constantinopolitanam synodum suspicionibus, in Istricorum se separatione removerat. Qui cum Romam venisset, recepta a nobis juvante Domino ratione, excessum suum, recepta Dominici v corporis communione correxit. Quia ergo, ut dictum est, non in hæresim incidit, sed a sacris generalis Ecclesiæ mysteriis quasi rectae studio intentionis erravit, imbecillitati ejus atque necessitatibus consulentes, maximeque sustentationi ejus pietatis intuitu providentes, in tua Ecclesia 695 Syracusana eum praevidimus cardinandum;
Gregory to Maximian, bishop of Syracuse. The bearer of these presents, the deacon Felix, although he by no means lapsed into the dogma of the heretics, nor departed from the catholic faith, yet, enticed by depraved suspicions against the synod of Constantinople, had withdrawn into the separation of the Istrians. When he had come to Rome, having received from us, with the Lord's help, an account, he corrected his error, having received communion of the Lord's Body. Since therefore, as has been said, he did not fall into heresy, but strayed from the sacred mysteries of the universal Church as it were out of zeal for a right intention, having regard for his weakness and needs, and above all providing for his sustenance out of piety, we have determined that he be enrolled as a cardinal-cleric in your Church of Syracuse;
額我略致敘拉古主教瑪西米安。這封信的持信人、執事斐理斯,雖絕未陷入異端的教義,也未離棄大公信仰,卻因受了反對君士坦丁堡會議的惡劣猜疑所誘,退入伊斯特里亞人的分裂之中。及至他來到羅馬,藉主的幫助從我們領受了教訓,便改正其錯誤,領受了主的聖體之共融。故既然如上所述,他並未陷入異端,只是彷彿出於對正直意向的熱心而偏離了普世教會的神聖奧祕,我們顧念他的軟弱與需要,尤其出於敬虔為他的贍養設想,已決定將他列入你敘拉古教會的樞要聖職之中;
324:2
(Cf. Joan. Diac. I. III, c. 20.)
whether that he may discharge the office of the diaconate, or certainly that he may obtain only the emoluments of that same office for the maintenance of his poverty — this we wish to depend upon the judgment of your Fraternity. And we exhort that your Fraternity hasten to fulfill this. Commending also his person, that you suffer him to be subject to no vexations or hardships, lest you be found either to have neglected the tenor of our commendation, or to have shown less to the poor than your order demands — since we also have caused something yearly to be given to him from our Church, so that we might be able to be partakers of that same work which we exhort you to perform. (Cf. John the Deacon, Book III, ch. 20.)
