275:1
Gregorius universis habitatoribus Arimini.
Gregory to all the inhabitants of Ariminum. If, most beloved sons, you would more intently attend to your fault, you ought by assiduous prayer before God to purge yourselves, in that you received your bishop not with devout mind nor as sons: whom the disquiet and tribulation brought upon him by you led to this point, that he fell into bodily affliction — although in him we have learned nothing of those things which have been written to us, but have seen only that there is weakness in him, on account of which we have taken care to retain him here.
(Cf. Joan. Diac. I. IV, c. 52.)
And since he is now for the present unable to return thither, we have of necessity provided for your Church that Leontius, our brother and fellow-bishop, be appointed visitor in all things, to whom also we have enjoined by our writings that he ought to order all things which pertain to the care and interest of the Church, as its proper bishop. Do you therefore so obey him in all things, that, aided by your devotion, he may be able wholesomely in all things to fulfil the task of visitation enjoined upon him. (Compare John the Deacon, book 4, chapter 52.)
