486:1
Gregorius Cypriano diacono.
Gregory to Cyprianus the deacon. Paula, the bearer of these presents, has complained to us that a certain Theodore, a converted Jew, has become exceedingly and without cause her enemy; to such a degree that—which it is impious to say—he strives by the wickedness of sorceries to injure her, and that this same Theodore is more firmly vindicated against this crime by the men of the Church of Messina. Let your Charity therefore be zealous that no one of the ecclesiastics attempt to stand against the aforesaid woman in this cause. But be careful, as you are able, to investigate this very thing. And if the above-mentioned Theodore should be shown to be guilty of so great an iniquity, cause it to be vindicated by strict punishment, through those whom it concerns, in such a way that both God may be appeased, and it may be an example of restraint to others.
