GREGORIUS. Hac de re temere desinire nil audeo. Nonnulli namque in quadam terrarum parte infernum esse putaverunt: alii vero hunc sub terra esseæstimant. Sed tamen hoc animum pulsat, quia si idcirco infernum die cimus quia inferius jaeet, quod terra ad cœlum est, hoc esse infernus debet ad terram. Unde et fortasse per Psalmistam dicitur:- Liberasti animam meam ex inferno inferiori (Psal. LXXXV, 13); ut infernus It superior in terra, infernus vero inferior sub terra esse 1 videatur.

GREGORY. On this matter I dare rashly define nothing. For some have thought hell to be in a certain part of the earth; but others estimate it to be beneath the earth. Yet this strikes my mind: that if we call it hell (infernum) because it lies below (inferius), then as the earth is to heaven, so ought hell to be to the earth. Whence perhaps it is said through the Psalmist: You have delivered my soul from the lower hell (Psalm 85:13); so that the upper hell may seem to be upon the earth, but the lower hell beneath the earth.

And the voice of John accords with this estimation, who, when he said that he had seen a book sealed with seven seals, because no one was found worthy, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor beneath the earth, to open the book and to loose its seals, added: And I wept much (Rev. 5:4). Which book, however, he afterward says is opened by the Lion of the tribe of Judah. By which book what else but Holy Scripture is signified? Which our Redeemer alone opened, who having been made man, by dying, rising, ascending, laid open all the mysteries that had been closed in it. And none in heaven, because not an angel; none on earth, because not a man living in the body;

none beneath the earth was found worthy, because neither could souls stripped of the body open to us, apart from the Lord, the secrets of the sacred discourse. Since therefore for loosing the book no one beneath the earth is said to be found worthy, I see nothing to hinder that hell be believed to be beneath the earth. PETER. I ask you, is the fire of Gehenna to be believed to be one; or, according as there has been so great a diversity of sins, are just so many fires also to be reckoned to have been prepared?
