469:1
Gregory to Candidus, our priest throughout the Gauls. Dominicus, the bearer of these presents, has tearfully made known to us that four of his brothers, redeemed from captivity by Jews, are now detained at Narbonne in the servitude of those same Jews. And since it is altogether grievous and to be abhorred that Christians should be in the servitude of Jews, we exhort your Beloved by the present writings, that you strive to search out the matter with all subtlety and solicitude. And if it be truly so, and it shall be established to you by manifest truth that neither they themselves nor the aforesaid bearer have the means to redeem them, let it be the work of your zeal to redeem them, knowing that whatever you shall have given for them will without doubt be reckoned to your account.
