Cum fraternitas vestra minus erga monasteria sibi subjecta studet esse sollicila, et ipsa culpam reprehensionis incurrit, et nos a de sua lenitate contrislat. Pervenit autem ad nos Mauric ium quemdam, qui nuper in monasterio Barbaciani conversus est, ablatis secum aliis monachis, fuga de eodem monasterio discessisse. Qua in te praedictum nobis Barbacianum sua praecipitatio vehementer accusat, qui temere saecularem bominem, et non ante probatum, tonsuravit. Nunquid non vobis scripsimus ut prius eum probareLis, et tunc, si aptus esset, b abbatem facere deberetis ? Vel nunc ergo circa eum quem elegistis, estote sollicili.

Gregory to Fortunatus, bishop of Naples. When your fraternity is less than solicitous toward the monasteries subject to it, it both incurs the fault of reprehension itself, and saddens us by its own leniency. For it has reached us that a certain Mauricius, who was recently converted in the monastery of Barbacianus, has departed in flight from that same monastery, carrying off with him other monks besides. In which matter the aforesaid Barbacianus, reported to us, is vehemently accused by his own rashness, in that he rashly tonsured a secular man, and one not previously tested. Did we not write to you that you should first test him, and then, if he were suitable, you should make him abbot? At least now, therefore, be solicitous concerning the one whom you have chosen.

Nam vos iUlo delinquente delinquitis, si ita coeperit se exhibcre, ut se ad fratrum ostendat regimen indignum. Præterea Grat. i9, q. 5, c. 6) monasteriis omnibus fraternitas vestra districtius interdicat ut eos quos ad convertendum susceperint, c priusquam biennium in conversatione compleant, nullo modo audeant tonsurare. Sed boc spatio vita moresque eorum sollicite comprobentur, ne quis eorum aut non sit contentus quod voluit, aut ratuni non habeat 1057 quod elegit. Nam dum grave sit d inexpertos hominum obsequiis sociari, quis possit dicere quanto sit gravius ad Dei servitium improbatos applicari?
因為若他開始如此顯露，以致顯明自己不配治理弟兄，你就因他犯罪而犯罪。此外，願你的弟兄之情更嚴格地禁止所有隱修院：對於它們為皈依修道而收納的人，在他們於修道生活中滿兩年之前，絕不可擅自為他們剃髮。乃要在此期間仔細考驗他們的生活與品行，免得他們中有人或不滿足於他所願的，或不以他所選擇的為定局。因為既然把未經考驗之人聯於對人的服事都是嚴重之事，誰能說把未經核准之人任用於對神的服事，是何等更為嚴重呢？
For you sin by his sinning, if he should begin to show himself in such a way that he proves himself unworthy of the governance of the brethren. Moreover, let your fraternity more strictly forbid all the monasteries that those whom they have received for conversion, before they have completed two years in the monastic life, they should by no means dare to tonsure. But in this space let their life and morals be carefully approved, lest any of them either be not content with what he wished, or not hold as ratified what he chose. For while it is a grave thing to associate untested men in the services of men, who could say how much graver it is to apply unapproved men to the service of God?

Quod nisi diligenter fuerit custoditum, omnem subjectorum in te culpam inexcusabiliter noveris redundare, qui minus te erga eos rebus ipsis testaris esse sollicitum r.
但若有士兵願意皈依修道，在此事稟報我們之前，任何人不得未經我們同意、以任何理由擅自收納他。除非此事被殷勤遵守，你當知道你屬下一切的過失都無可推諉地歸咎於你，因你以事實本身證明自己對他們不夠關切。
But if a soldier should wish to be converted, before it is reported to us, let no one presume by any reasoning to receive him without our consent. And unless this be diligently observed, know that all the fault of your subordinates redounds inexcusably upon you, who by the very facts testify yourself to be less than solicitous toward them.
