175:1
Gregorius Theodoro a duci b Sardiniae. Justitiam, quam mente geritis, oportet comm hominibus luce operum demonstretis. Juliana siquidem abbatissa monasterii c sancti Viti, quod 543 Vituta d quondam recordandæ memoriae construxerat, insinuavit nobis a Donato officiali vestro possessionem juris prædicti monasterii detentari. Qui dum escelleotiæ vestrae patrociniis c se cingi conspicit, ad examinandum judicium venire contemnit. Sed nunc r gloria vestra praecipiat eumdem officialem cum praedicta ancilla Dei arbitrale subire judicium, quatenus quidquid eorum de tali controversia arbitronum judicio fuerit diffnitum, effectui mancipe. tur;
額我略致撒丁尼亞公爵泰奧多。你心中所懷的公義,理當藉善行的光輝向世人彰顯。因為聖維多隱修院——即已故堪念的維圖塔所建者——的院長茱莉安娜向我們告知:前述隱修院所應有的一項產業,被你的官吏多納圖斯不義地霸佔。而他既見自己有你閣下的庇護為護身,便不屑前來接受審判的查究。但如今,願你的榮光命令這同一官吏,與前述天主的使女一同接受仲裁審判,好叫仲裁人就此爭議所裁定的一切,得以付諸實行;
Gregory to Theodore, duke of Sardinia. The justice which you bear in your mind you ought to demonstrate to men by the light of your works. For Juliana, abbess of the monastery of Saint Vitus, which Vituta of once-worthy memory had built, has informed us that a possession belonging to the right of the aforesaid monastery is being wrongfully held by Donatus, your official. And he, while he sees himself girded with the patronage of your Excellency, disdains to come to the examination of judgment. But now let your Glory command the same official to submit, with the aforesaid handmaid of God, to arbitral judgment, so that whatever shall have been determined by the judgment of the arbiters concerning such a controversy may be carried into effect;
175:2
so that whatever he shall perceive himself to lose or to retain, this may be reckoned to be done not by the work of power, but by the justice of law. Besides, Pompeiana, a religious woman, who is known to have built a monastery in her own house, has complained that the mother of her once son-in-law, now deceased, wishes to annul his testament, so that the last will of her son may be brought to nought. On which account, out of fatherly charity, we have deemed it necessary to exhort your Glory, that you should gladly, with justice preserved, lend yourself to pious causes, and that whatever reason of law grants to these, you should kindly command to be observed. And we beseech the Lord that He may propitiously direct the way of your life, and dispose with prosperity the dignity of the administration you have undertaken.
