* Gregorius Virgilio episcopo Arclatensi. Quantus sit affectus venientibus spon:e fratribus impendendus, ex eo quod plerumque solent char-itatis causa invitari, cognoscitur. Et ideo si communem fratrem Augustinum episcopuin ad vos venire contigerit, ita illum dilectio vestra, sicut decet, affectuose dulciterque suscipial, ut et ipsum consolationis suæ bono refoveat, et alios qualiter fraterna ch aritas colenda sit doceat. Et quoniam sæpius evenit ut hi qui longe sunt positi prius ab aliis quae sunt emendanda cognoscant, b si quas fortasse fraternitati vestræ sacerdotum vel aliorum c lpas intulerit, una cnm eo residentes subtili cuncta investigatione perquirite.
額我略致亞爾主教維吉里。當如何以厚愛對待那自願前來的弟兄，由此可知：他們多半是為愛德之故而被邀請的。所以，倘若我們共同的弟兄奧斯定主教前來你處，願你的仁愛照理當地以親切甘美的態度接待他，好使他既以安慰之善溫暖他，又教導別人當如何培養弟兄的愛德。又因往往有這樣的事：那被置於遠處的人，比別人先察覺當糾正之事，倘若他或許向你的弟兄之情指出司鐸或他人的某些過失，你當與他同坐，以精細的查考詳查一切。
Gregory to Virgilius, bishop of Arles. How great is the affection to be shown to brethren who come of their own accord, is known from this, that they are for the most part wont to be invited for charity's sake. And therefore, if it should chance that our common brother Augustine the bishop comes to you, let your Love receive him, as is fitting, affectionately and sweetly, so that he may both cherish him by the good of his consolation, and teach others how brotherly charity ought to be cultivated. And since it often happens that those who are set far off first perceive the things that are to be amended before others do, if perchance he shall have brought to your Fraternity any faults of priests or of others, sitting together with him, search out all things by subtle investigation.

And so show yourselves strict and solicitous in those things which offend God and provoke Him to wrath, that, for the amendment of others, both punishment may strike the guilty, and false opinion may not afflict the innocent.
