Gregorius clero, ordini et plebi consistenti! us Miseni. Cognoscentes Ecclesiam vestram sacerdotis regimine destitutam, curae nostræ fuit visitationem ejusdem Ecclesiæ fratri et coepiscopo nostro Fortunato solemniter delegare. Cui dedimus in mandatis ut nihil de proveclionibus clericorum, reditu, ornatu ministeriisque a quoquam usurpari patiatur. Cujus vos assiduis adhortationibus convenit obedire et, remoto strepitu, uno eodemque consensu t lem volai! præficicndum a expetere sacerdotem, qui et a vener ndis canonibus nulla discrepet ratione, et tanto ministerio dignus valeat reperiri.
額我略致居於彌塞農的聖職人員、教階與百姓。我們得知你們的教會失去了主教的治理，遂關切地鄭重委託我們的弟兄與同為主教的福圖納圖斯前往巡視該教會。我們囑咐他：不容任何人僭奪關乎聖職人員晉升、收入、裝飾與職務的任何事物。你們應當聽從他不懈的勸勉，並且摒除喧嚷，以一致的同意為自己尋求這樣一位可立為主教的人：既在任何方面都不與可敬的教會法規相牴觸，又能被認定配得如此重大的職務。
Gregory to the clergy, order, and people dwelling at Misenum. Having learned that your Church is bereft of the governance of a bishop, it has been our care solemnly to delegate the visitation of that same Church to our brother and fellow-bishop Fortunatus. To him we have given in charge that he suffer nothing pertaining to the advancement of the clergy, to the revenues, to the ornaments, or to the ministries to be usurped by anyone. Him you ought to obey with unremitting exhortations, and, all clamour being removed, with one and the same accord to seek such a bishop to be set over you as may in no respect be at variance with the venerable canons, and may be found worthy of so great a ministry.

Qui dum fuerit postulatus, cum solemnitate decreti omnium subscriptionibus roborati, et Visitatoris pagina prosequente, ad nos veniat ordinandus: provisuri ante omnia ne cujuslibet vitæ vel meriti laicaln personam praesumatis eligere. Et non solum ille ad episcopatus apicem nulla ratione provehetur, verum etiam vos nullis intercessionibus veniam promereri posse cogno. scite; sed omnes quos ex vobis de laica persona aspirasse constiterit, ab officio et a communione alienos ficiendos procul dubio noveriiis.
當這人被推舉出來後，就當帶著眾人簽署所確認的法定文書，並附有巡視者的書面文件，前來我處受祝聖：你們尤要在一切之先防範，不可膽敢揀選一個在俗之身或功績的人。這樣的人不但絕不會被擢升至主教的高位，你們自己也要知道：無論如何懇求都無法蒙得赦免；而且你們當中凡被查明曾為在俗之人謀求此職者，毫無疑問都要被逐出職務、隔絕於共融之外。
And when he has been asked for, let him come to us to be ordained, with the solemnity of a decree confirmed by the subscriptions of all, and accompanied by the document of the Visitor: providing before all else that you do not presume to elect a person of lay life or merit. And not only shall such a one in no wise be advanced to the summit of the episcopate, but know also that you yourselves can obtain no pardon by any intercessions; rather, know beyond doubt that all among you who shall be found to have aspired on behalf of a lay person are to be made strangers to their office and to communion.
