Gregorius Fantino defensori. Indicavit nobis Jamnus Judseus præsentium portitor, navem suam atque res suas Candidum defensorcm nostrum cum aliis creditoribus occupasse, atque eas pro credita a quam dederant pecunia venundedisse, et cunctis debitis cautionibus restitutis, solum apud se praefatum defensorem obligationis chirographum tenuisse, et sæpius se supplicantem ideo reddere contempsisse, quia, ut ait, sors est debiti satisfacta. Experientiæ ergo tuæ præcipimus, ut cum omni subtilitate curet addiscere? et si ita repererit, districta compulsione perurge, quatenus omni mora postposita, b cautionem praedicti portitoris restituat.
額我略致護衛官凡提努斯。現今這封信的持信人、猶太人雅姆努斯告知我們：我們的護衛官坎狄杜斯連同其他債主，扣押了他的船隻與財物，並將它們變賣，以抵他們所借貸的款項；又說，一切債務都已按借據清償之後，上述護衛官卻獨自留存著那份債務憑證，儘管他屢次懇求，卻仍不肯歸還，因為據他說，這筆債的本金已然清償。因此我們囑咐你的幹練：要留心以萬全的仔細查明此事；倘若你查得果真如此，就以嚴厲的強制催逼他，好使他撇下一切拖延，歸還上述持信人的憑證。
Gregory to Fantinus, defensor. Jamnus, a Jew, the bearer of the present letter, has informed us that our defensor Candidus, together with other creditors, seized his ship and his goods, and sold them for the money which they had lent on credit; and that, all the debts having been settled according to the bonds, the aforesaid defensor alone retained with him the written bond of obligation, and, though he often entreated it, disdained to return it, because, as he says, the principal of the debt has been satisfied. We charge your Experience therefore that you take care to learn the matter with all thoroughness; and if you find it to be so, urge him by strict compulsion, so that, all delay being set aside, he restore the bond of the aforesaid bearer.
