Quanto cordi nostro laetitiam Ecclesiae ordo inculjpabiliter custoditus infundit, tanto rescissus 916 tædium doloris imponit, quod pravitatis temeritas in eversionein disciplinae tentat et quæ sunt olim laudabililer statuta dissolvere, et quae fortius punienda præsumere.

Gregory to Victor and Columbus, bishops of Africa, jointly. As much as the order of the Church, kept blamelessly, pours joy into our heart, so much does it, when rent asunder, impose the weariness of grief, when the rashness of depravity attempts the overthrow of discipline, both to dissolve things that were once laudably established, and to presume things that ought rather to be more sternly punished.

Præsentium itaque portiloris Crisconii ^ fratris et coepiscopi nostri querela ad nos insinuante pervenit quod, nulla exigente culpa, vel coucilii definiente sententia, Ecclesiæ ejus parochiæ antiquitus deputatae 8 a Valentione fratre et coepiscopo nostro ante fere quindecim annos sint irrationabiliter occupatae, atque eum insuper res decessoris ipsius ad suum, quod dici grave est, arbitrium abstulisse. Quod si ita veritas se babet, quam perversum, quamve sit exsecrandum, præcipue b religioso proposito, dicere non valemus. Hac igitur in re, quia nec lenitas, nec aliqua debet esse dilatio, fraternitatcm vestram præsenti epistola commone nus, ut sollicitius requiratis.

For the complaint of the bearer of these presents, Crisconius, our brother and fellow-bishop, has reached us, informing us that, with no fault requiring it, nor with any sentence of a council determining it, the parishes anciently assigned to his church have, for nearly fifteen years now, been unreasonably seized by Valentio, our brother and fellow-bishop, and that he has moreover carried off the property of the latter's predecessor to his own—what is grievous to say—arbitrary disposal. And if the truth stands thus, how perverse and how detestable it is—especially in one of religious profession—we are unable to say. In this matter, therefore, since there ought to be neither leniency nor any delay, we admonish your Fraternity by this present letter to inquire the more carefully.

Et si querela ejus manifesta esse constiterit, ablatarum lerum et occupatarum parochiarum restitutione dilectio vestra sine mora succurri provideat, et ita omnia, vobis solatiantibus, cessante excusatione, justitia favente, recipiat, ut nec hunc labor observationis alliciat, ncc de ejus damno aliquid lucri invasnr acquirat. Accendat ergo vos zelus æquitatis, accendat justitiæ rectitudo. c Ad custodiendam in cunctis antiquam ecclesiastici ordinis dispositionem, operam instanter impendite, districtos sollicitosque vos inter culpas ei innocentiam exhibete, quatenus ct justitiam habentibus magna de rectitudinis vestrae sit zelo fiducia, et inquietis de futuro omnis excedendi amputetur occasio d.
倘若他的申訴確被證實屬實，願你的愛心設法使他毫不遲延地得著救助，就是歸還被奪去的財物和被強佔的堂區，如此，在你們的援助之下，一切藉口既止息，公義既得伸張，願他能收回一切，使這人既不因訴訟的勞苦而卻步，那強佔者也不因他的損失而得任何利益。因此，願公義的熱心激勵你們，願公正的正直激勵你們。為要在一切事上保守教會秩序的古老規制，你們當殷勤竭力；在有罪者與無辜者之間，顯出你們的嚴謹與關切，使那些持守公義的人對你們正直的熱心大有信心，而對那些不安分之人，將來一切越軌的機會都被斷絕。
And if his complaint is established to be manifest, let your Charity provide that succor be rendered without delay by the restoration of the property taken away and of the parishes seized, and so, with you affording aid, all excuse ceasing and justice favoring, let him recover all things, so that neither may the labor of the proceedings entice this man, nor may the invader acquire any gain from his loss. Let the zeal of equity therefore kindle you, let the rectitude of justice kindle you. Toward preserving in all things the ancient disposition of ecclesiastical order, expend your effort urgently; show yourselves strict and solicitous between the guilty and the innocent, so that both those who have justice may have great confidence in the zeal of your rectitude, and for the restless every occasion of transgressing in the future may be cut off.
