Gregorius Talitano. Cum tanta nos de vobis oporteat charitate praesumere, ut si Ecclesiae nostrae utilitates apud alios agerentur, vestram illic gloriam adhiberemus adjutricem, satis debemus quoniam in vobis est causa gaudere, quia vos non oportet negligere quod amore beati Petri, apostolorum principis, praestare ipsi apud alios poteratis. Quia igitur comperimus publici patrimonii curam vestrae ordinationi esse commis- I sam, idcirco paterna dulcedine salutantes, patrimonium vobis, quod est nostræ Ecclesiae, secundum justitiam commendamus.

Gregory to Talitanus. Since we ought to presume upon you with so great a charity that, if the advantages of our Church were being transacted before others, we would there employ your Glory as a helper, we ought all the more to rejoice inasmuch as the cause is among yourselves, because you ought not to neglect that which, for love of blessed Peter the chief of the Apostles, you could render on his behalf before others. Since, therefore, we have learned that the care of the public patrimony has been committed to your administration, therefore, greeting you with fatherly sweetness, we commend to you, according to justice, the patrimony which belongs to our Church.

In quo si forte, ut fieri assolet, occasione inventa a homines publici aliquam velint inferre molestiam, hoc magnitudinis vestræ bonitas fieri non permittat, b sed ab omni illud hominum inquietudine tueatur. Sicque salva ratione pauperum partes attendat, 1098 ut eleemosynae vicem impleat servata justitia, ct vobis ex hoc ante Dei oculos major merces accrescat. Hortamur ergo, dilectissime Fili, ut sic vos benignos exhibere tam circa Ecclesiae nostrae quam diligitis utilitates, quam etiam in omnibus curis Ecclesiarum debeatis, quatenus et injuncta salubriter expleatis, et omnipotentem Deum vobis, quod summopere studendum est, placabilem faciatis.
在此事上，倘若——如常有的情形——公職人員得了機會而想加以任何滋擾，願你尊位的良善不容此事發生，反倒保護那產業免受眾人一切的攪擾。並當在守住公義的前提下顧念窮人的利益，好使它既守住公義又盡了施捨的本分，並使你由此在天主眼前增添更大的賞報。所以，至愛的兒子，我們勸勉你：無論是在你所愛的、關乎我們教會的利益上，還是在各教會一切的照管上，都當如所應當地表現你的仁厚，好使你既有益地成全所交付的事，又使全能的天主——這是當竭力追求的——向你施恩顯眷。
In which, if perchance—as is wont to happen—public officials, having found an occasion, should wish to inflict any trouble, let the goodness of your Greatness not permit this to be done, but let it protect that property from all the disturbance of men. And so let it attend to the interests of the poor, with reason preserved, that it may fulfil the office of almsgiving while justice is kept, and that from this a greater reward may accrue to you before the eyes of God. We exhort you, therefore, most beloved son, so to show yourselves kindly, both concerning the advantages of our Church which you love, and also in all the cares of the Churches, as you ought, that both you may healthfully fulfil the things enjoined, and may render Almighty God—which is to be striven for above all—propitious to you.
