420:1
Gregorius Fortunato episcopo Neapolitano. Fraternitati vestrae aute huc tempus fcripsimus, ut hus qui de Judaica superstitione ad Christianam fidem Deo aspirante venire desiderant, dominis eorum nulla esset licentia venundandi; sed ex eo quo voluntatis suæ desiderium prodidissent, defendi in libertatem I er omnia debuissent. Sed quia, quantum cognovimus, nec voluntatem nostram, nec legum statuta subtili scientes discretione pensare, ill paganis servis hac se non arbitrantur conditione eonstringi, fratemitatem vestram (Grat. dist. 54 c. 15) oportet de Lis esse sollicitam;
額我略致那不勒斯的主教福圖納。我們在此之先曾寫信給你弟兄之情,論及那些蒙天主感召、渴望從猶太迷信歸向基督信仰之人:他們的主人不應有出賣他們的許可;反倒從他們表明其意願之時起,便理當在一切事上受保護而得自由。但因據我們所知,有些人——既不懂以細緻的審慎衡量我們的意旨,也不懂衡量律法的規定——竟以為他們就其外教奴僕不受此條件的約束,故此理當你的弟兄之情對這些事務加以留意;
Gregory to Fortunatus, bishop of Naples. We wrote to your Fraternity before this time, that to those who, God inspiring, desire to come from the Jewish superstition to the Christian faith, their masters should have no license of selling them; but that from the time they had disclosed the desire of their will, they ought in all respects to be defended into liberty. But because, as far as we have learned, some—knowing how to weigh neither our will nor the statutes of the laws with subtle discretion—do not think that they are bound by this condition with regard to their pagan slaves, it behooves your Fraternity to be solicitous concerning these matters;
420:2
a et si de eorum servitio ROn solum Judaeus, sed etiam quisquam paganorum fieri voluerit ChriStianus, postquam voluntas ejus fuerit patefacta, nec hunc b sub quolibet ingenio vet argumento cuipiam Judaeorum venundandi faculas sit, sed is qui ad ChrisUanam converti fidem desiderat defensione vestra in libertatem modis omnibus Vindicetur. Hi vero quos hujuscemodi oportet servos amittere, ne forsitan utilitates suas irrationabiliter æstiment impediri, sollicita vos haec convenit consideratione servare;
倘若在他們的奴僕中,不僅有猶太人、連任何外教人也願意成為基督徒,那麼在其意願顯明之後,就不可讓任何人以任何手段或藉口把他賣給任何猶太人;反倒要藉你的保護,以各樣方法使那渴望歸入基督信仰之人得以伸張而獲自由。但那些在此情形下理當失去奴僕之人——免得他們或許不合理地以為自己的利益受了阻礙——你理當以審慎的斟酌遵守以下之事;
and if, of their slaves, not only a Jew but also any of the pagans should wish to become a Christian, after his will has been made manifest, let there be no faculty for anyone to sell him to any of the Jews under any device or pretext whatsoever; but let him who desires to be converted to the Christian faith be by your defense vindicated into liberty by all means. But those who in such a case ought to lose their slaves—lest perchance they should unreasonably reckon their own interests to be impeded—it is fitting that you observe these things with careful consideration;
420:3
namely, that if pagans, whom for the sake of trade they have bought from foreign parts, should happen within three months—while a buyer to whom they may be sold is being found—to flee to the Church, and should say that they wish to become Christians, or even outside the Church should disclose such a will, let them receive their price from a Christian buyer. But if after the aforesaid three months any slave of this kind should declare his will, and should wish to become a Christian, let no one afterward dare to buy him, nor let the master under any species of occasion dare to sell him, but let him without doubt be led to the rewards of liberty, because he is understood to have reserved him not for selling, but for serving himself.
420:4
Haec igitur omnia fraterni tas vestra ita vigilanter observet, quatenus ei nee supplicatio quorumdam valeat, nec persona subripere. (Cf. Joan. Diac. I. IV, n. 46. )
因此,願你的弟兄之情如此警醒地遵守這一切,以致無論是某些人的懇求,還是私人的情面,都無法向你潛入。(參若望執事,第四卷,第46節。)
Let your Fraternity therefore observe all these things so watchfully that neither the supplication of certain persons, nor personal influence, may be able to steal upon you. (Cf. John the Deacon, Book IV, no. 46.)
