GREGORIUS. Unus quidem est gehennæ ignis, sed non uno modo omnes cruciat peccatores. Uniuscujusque etenim quantum exigit culpa, b tanta illic sentitur paena. Nam sicut in hoc mundo sab uno sole multi consistunt, nec tamen ejusdem solis ardorem:equaliter sentiunt, c quia alius plus aestuat, atque alios minus; 449 ita illic in uno igne non unus est modus incendii; quia quod hic diversitas corporum, hoc illic agit diversitas peccatorum, ut et ignem non dissimilem habeant, et tamen eosdem singulos dissimiliter exurat. PETR. Nunquidnam, quaeso te, dicimus eos qui semel illic mersi faerint, semper arsuros?

GREGORY. There is indeed one fire of Gehenna, but it does not torment all sinners in one manner. For as much as each one's fault demands, so much punishment is felt there. For just as in this world many stand under one sun, yet do not feel the heat of the same sun equally — because one glows more, and another less — so there in one fire there is not one mode of burning; because what here is the diversity of bodies, there the diversity of sins effects, so that they both have a fire not dissimilar, and yet it burns each of them dissimilarly. PETER. I ask you, do we say that those who have once been plunged there shall burn for ever?
