Sell omnipotentem Dtum rogo ut suæ vos gratiæ aspiratione consoletur, vosque et a malignis spiritibus et a perversis hominibus coelesti protectione custodiat. Nam si quos post illius obitum tumultus quorumdam adversantium sustinetis, nolitc mirari. Si vos frui bonis in terra vestra, id est c in terra viventium quæritis,.mala homnum in terra aliena portare debetis. Gregory to Aurelius, of the Franks. On hearing of the passing of my sweetest lily, your brother, my written speech is not able to unfold with how great a grief I have been struck. I beseech Almighty God to console you with the breath of His grace, and to guard you by heavenly protection both from malignant spirits and from perverse men. For if after his death you endure certain tumults raised by some who oppose you, do not marvel. If you seek to enjoy good things in your own land, that is, in the land of the living, you must bear the evils of men in a foreign land. For the present life is a pilgrimage; and to one who sighs after his homeland, the place of pilgrimage is a torment, even though it may seem alluring.

Itaque, 1176 quod cœpistis, hospitalitatis curam impendite, in oratione ct lacrymis instantissime laborate. Elcemosynis, quas semper amastis, jam nunc largius atque ubelius operam date, ut tanto post in retributione crescat vobis d fructus operis, quanto hic excreverit studium laboris.
至於你們這些尋求故鄉的人，在你們發出的歎息之中，我也聽見人間壓迫的呻吟湧起。這是藉全能天主奇妙的安排而成就的：當真理藉愛呼喚時，現世藉它所加的患難，把你們的心靈從自身趕離；心靈愈被推逼、又同時被呼喚，就愈容易脫離對今世的貪愛。因此，在你們所開始的事上，要竭力款待客旅，在禱告與眼淚中最殷勤地勞苦。在你們素來喜愛的施捨上，如今要更慷慨、更豐盛地效力，好使日後在報償中，你們工作的果實增長，正如在此勞苦的熱心已然增長一般。
But as for you who seek your homeland, amid the sighs you utter I also hear the groans of human oppression arising. This is done by the wondrous dispensation of Almighty God, so that while truth calls through love, the present world by the tribulations it brings drives back your soul from itself; and the mind departs the more easily from the love of this age the more it is impelled while it is called. Therefore, in what you have begun, devote yourselves to the care of hospitality, labour most earnestly in prayer and in tears. In almsgiving, which you have always loved, now labour more generously and more abundantly, so that afterward, in the recompense, the fruit of your work may grow for you in proportion as here the zeal of your labour has increased.
