Quod adeo, sicut est, urgnum existimat, 1025 nt ad hoc obtinendum etiam nostram sui commendationem adhibere studuerit adjutrirem. IllIne igitur quoniam ad vestrum videmus palrociniurn desilleranter velle confugere, scribere pro eo non judicavimus differendum: confidentes tanto vos defensionem petentibus libenter impertiri, quanto et cam in tristitia et in stricto positos cognoscitis suppliciter exspectare.

Gregory to Vantilo and Arigius. It accrues to the praise of your glory's rule, that Hilarius, the bearer of the present letter, trusts himself to be relieved by strong protection, if he shall have merited to obtain the favour of your guardianship. Which indeed, as it is, he esteems so great, that to obtain it he has striven to employ even our commendation of him as a helper. Since therefore we see that he desires eagerly to take refuge in your patronage, we have not judged that writing on his behalf should be deferred: confident that you willingly impart defence to those who seek it, as much as you know that he, placed in sadness and in straits, suppliantly awaits it.

Ea de re gloriam vestram paterna dulcedine salutantes, petimus ut quia prædictus portitor aliquorum inimicitiis se Contra rationem asserit subjacere, patrocinium vestrum, quod magnopere cupit, inveniat, et nullam illum contra aequitatem moleetiam, nullam vexationem patiamini sustinere; sed ab omni eum afflictione, quam non ratio, sed adventantium voluntas ingesserit, patrocinii vestri gratia tueatur; ut et hic optatum se in vobis, ut sperat, laetetur invenisse refugium, et aliquid vobis ad mercedem proficiat, c ac vestrum quidem in nobis alii similiter quaerere discant in tribulatione solatium.
為此，我們以父親般的甘甜問候你們的榮耀，懇求你們——既然上述持信人自稱違背情理地受制於某些人的仇害——願他得著他所極其渴慕的你們的庇護，並願你們不容他違背公平地承受任何騷擾、任何欺凌；乃願藉你們庇護之恩，護庇他脫離一切苦害，就是那並非出於情理、乃出於加害者意欲而強加於他的；如此，他既能在你們身上尋得他所盼望、所願的避難所而歡喜，又能有所裨益於你們的賞賜，並使他人同樣學會在患難中向你們、如向我們一樣尋求慰藉。
On this account, greeting your glory with fatherly sweetness, we ask that — since the aforesaid bearer asserts himself to be subjected against reason to the enmities of certain men — he may find your patronage, which he greatly desires, and that you suffer him to bear no annoyance against equity, no vexation; but that by the grace of your patronage he be protected from every affliction which not reason, but the will of assailants, shall have brought upon him; so that both here he may rejoice to have found in you, as he hopes, the refuge he wished, and that it may profit something to your reward, and that others may likewise learn to seek from you, as from us, solace in tribulation.
