Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon. The more that widows who live well are deprived of the solace of husbands, the more earnestly ought ecclesiastical protection to be bestowed upon them. And therefore we assign to you the page of this precept, that to Alexandria, a woman of magnificence, once the relict of Vincomalus, you may hasten with all urgency and all solicitude, wherever it shall be needful—equity of course being preserved—to extend protection, and diligently to concur with her interests; nor permit her to be harassed by anyone, or to sustain molestation; but so, as we have said before, where the cause shall require, let her enjoy the aid of your solicitude, that no one may in any way attempt to encroach upon her amid affliction and oppression while you are set there present.
