Gregorius Anthemio subdiacono Campaniae. Theodora relicta Sabini defensoris, misso huc homine suo, questa est nobis a filio suo et 1104 Aligerno -quodam, cujus fil am idem filius ejus in con.ugio suo sortitus esi, deceptam esse, ut omnes res suas tempore nuptiarum eidem filio donatienis titulo legaret, et nunc se ab eis valde despici atque contemni; adeo ut, ablais rebus ipsius, nihil ei unde possit nutriri remanserit. A quibus insuper etiam tantam se adversitatem asserit sustinere, ut nec servum juris sui ci deservire, nee in aliquo solatiari permittant. Et quia, si ita se res habet, grave nimis et contra Deum est, hujus libi auctoritatis tenore præcipimus ut veritatem cures addiscere.

Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon of Campania. Theodora, widow of Sabinus the defensor, having sent her man hither, has complained to us that she has been deceived by her son and by a certain Aligernus, whose daughter that son of hers took in his marriage, so that at the time of the nuptials she made over all her property to that son under the title of a donation, and that now she is greatly despised and scorned by them; to such a degree that, her goods having been taken away, nothing has remained to her whereby she might be sustained. From whom, moreover, she asserts that she endures so great adversity that they permit neither a slave under her own right to serve her, nor to be comforted in anything. And because, if the matter stands thus, it is exceedingly grievous and against God, we command you by the tenor of this authority to take care to learn the truth.

Et si iia repereris, ecclesiasticam tuitionem impendere, atque eam salva in omnibus ratione adjuvare festines, quatenus te illic posito nullum denuo gravamen vel oppressionem a praedictis viris quolibet modo sustineat. Sed providere studii tui sit ut in id quod se deceptam queritur legaliter valeat subveniri, quia omnino crudele est ut mulier quae ex filii persona debet sperare solatium, per eum magis necessitati cogatur vel inopiae subjacere. Quod si forte quies vel sola ium ipsius te procurante non potuerit ordinari, nobis renuntiare festina, ut quid post haec facere debeas, nostra iterum praeceptione cognoscas.
若你查明確是如此，就當趕緊施予教會的保護，並在凡事守住公道的情形下幫助她，使得在你身處那裡時，她絲毫不至再從上述之人手中承受任何新的委屈或欺壓。你要殷勤留意，使她在自訴受騙一事上得著合法的救濟；因為一個婦人本當從她兒子的身分指望得著安慰，如今反倒藉著他被逼陷於困厄與貧乏，這實在是極其殘忍的。倘若她的安寧或慰藉經你經辦仍無法安排妥當，就趕緊向我們稟報，好叫你再從我們的訓令中得知此後你當如何行。
And if you find it so, hasten to bestow ecclesiastical protection, and to aid her, right being preserved in all things, so that, while you are placed there, she may in no wise suffer any fresh grievance or oppression from the aforesaid men. But let it be the concern of your diligence that she may be lawfully succored in that wherein she complains of having been deceived; for it is altogether cruel that a woman who ought to hope for comfort from the person of her son should rather, through him, be forced to lie under necessity or want. But if perchance her quiet or consolation cannot be arranged through your management, hasten to report to us, that you may learn again by our instruction what you ought to do thereafter.
