168:1
Gregorius Philippo, * comiti excubitorum. Unde indignus eg" ad suscipienda episcopatus onera, jussioni omnipotentis Dei vestræque voluntati me subdidi, cui me præess e largitate magis gratiæ quam judicii aestimatione vo lui -lis.
Gregory to Philip, count of the excubitors. As far as man is not able to discuss and investigate the judgments from above, so far ought he to bend the neck of his heart beneath them; so that, since he is ignorant by what judgment that which is bestowed upon him is disposed, he ought neither to insist boldly in seeking a place, nor to be found contumacious in repelling it. Whence I, unworthy for taking up the burdens of the episcopate, subjected myself to the command of Almighty God and to your will, you who willed me to preside more by the largess of grace than by the estimation of judgment.
168:2
Potens est euim Deus, propter quem me indignum diligitis, hanc vobis in perpetuum recompeusare mercedem, ut gratiam quam indignis famulis ejus impenditis, apud eum invenire multiplicius vaIcatis. Causas vero Italiæ vestra, quæso, excellentia habeat commendatas, ut dum vas petentibus libenter impenditis, omne quod a Deo petitis quautocius impetretis. (Cf. Joan. Diac. I. I, c. 5ł.)
For God, for whose sake you love me though unworthy, is able to recompense to you this reward in perpetuity, so that the grace which you bestow on His unworthy servants you may be able manifoldly to find with Him. But the affairs of Italy, I beg, let your Excellency have commended, so that while you willingly bestow a vessel on those who ask, you may most speedily obtain all that you ask of God. (Cf. John the Deacon, bk. I, ch. 52.)
