312:1
Gregorius a Constantio episcopo Mediolanensi. Scripta fraternitatis vestræ suscipiens magnas omnipotenti Deo gratias retuli, quia ordinationis vestræ merui celebratione relevari. Quod "crn Nx superno munere in electionem vestram concorditer omnium convenit assensus, hoc fraternitas tua cum summa debet consideratione pensare, quia post Deum valde est debitrix eis qui sibi vos præferri tam sub. dita mente voluerunt. Decet igitur vos sacerdotali benignitate eorum muribus in omnibus respunderc, eorumque necessitatibus b pia compassione coucurrerc.
Gregory to Constantius, bishop of Milan. On receiving the writings of your Fraternity, I rendered great thanks to Almighty God, because I was deemed worthy to be relieved by the celebration of your ordination. And since by the supernal gift the assent of all concordantly came together in your election, your Fraternity ought to weigh this with the highest consideration: that, after God, you are greatly a debtor to those who with so submissive a mind willed you to be preferred to themselves. It befits you therefore to answer their conduct in all things with priestly kindness, and to run to their needs with pious compassion.
312:2
Joannes vero subdiaconus noster multa nobis bona ture fraternitatis rediens nuntiavit.
If perchance any have vices, rebuke these with mature reproofs, so that even the priestly indignation may be tempered with the sweetness of virtue, so that you may then be loved by your subjects even when you are gravely feared. This matter also brings your person, in their judgment, to great reverence as well; because just as headlong and habitual rage is despised, so, on the contrary, discreet indignation against faults, the more slowly it moves, the more it is to be feared. And John our subdeacon, on returning, announced to us many good things of your Fraternity. Concerning which we ask Almighty God that He Himself who has begun these things may perfect them; so that He may show you to have advanced both inwardly and outwardly, both now among men and hereafter among the angels.
312:3
Moreover, we have transmitted, according to custom, the pallium to be used at the sacred solemnities of the Masses. But I beg that, while you receive its honour, you may vindicate its honour and dignity by humility.
