Gregorius Candido a episcopo de urbe veteri majore. Indicavit nobis fraternitas tua se non babere pres- byteros, et ex hac causa necessitatem non 815 modicam sustinere. Et quia in quibusdam monasteriis in sua parochia constitutis quosdam esse menachos perhibet qui ad hoc apti possint esse officium, et eos se cum nostra auctoritate ad hunc postulat ordinem promovere, propterea præsentibus vobis licentiam damus epistolis monachos de monasteriis in tua parochia positis cum consensu abbatis sui tollere, et presbyteros ordinare.

Gregory to Candidus, bishop of the great old city (Civitavecchia). Your Fraternity has informed us that you do not have presbyters, and that from this cause you are enduring no small necessity. And since you assert that in certain monasteries established in your parish there are certain monks who might be fit for this office, and you request that with our authority you may promote them to this order, therefore, by the present letters, we grant you license to take monks—with the consent of their abbot—from the monasteries situated in your parish, and to ordain them presbyters.

Sed illud præ omnibus estote solliciti, ut vitam actusque eorum ui in hoc sunt officio constituendi subtiliter debeatis inquirere, et tunc eos, si digni fuerint, ordinare. Si vero aliqua in eis culpa claruerit quæ eos ad hunc ordinem canonica prohibitione provehi non permittat, nullius vobis supplicatio aut gratia personæ subrepat, ut talibus debeatis manum imponere, ne, quod absit, hic honor, et illis pœna, et vobis incipiat esse peccatum b.
但你要在萬事之上格外謹慎：對那些將被立於此職之人，你當細緻查究其生活與行為，然後，若他們配得，才可祝聖他們。但若在他們身上顯出任何依教規禁令不容他們被擢升至此品級的過失，就不可讓任何人的懇求或情面向你潛入，以致你為這等人覆手；免得——但願不至於——這尊榮對他們成了刑罰，對你成了罪過。
But above all things be solicitous that you subtly inquire into the life and conduct of those who are to be established in this office, and then, if they are worthy, ordain them. But if any fault should become manifest in them which, by canonical prohibition, does not permit them to be advanced to this order, let no supplication or favor of any person creep upon you, so that you should lay hands upon such men; lest, which God forbid, this honor become both a punishment to them and a sin to you.
